Chapter 7 - My Career Didn’t Die

Nordexia deployment completed Saturday evening.

Twenty-one hours late.

No data loss.

No client breach.

No career apocalypse.

At the postmortem, I told exact truth.

My company-issued laptop was intentionally destroyed by a family member during final deployment.

IT recovered local encrypted objects.

Team reconstructed two files.

The real failure in process:

We had allowed one engineer’s final integration changes to remain local too long.

Mine.

Even though extraordinary event caused loss, we improved.

More frequent secure checkpoints.

Two-person final build.

I did not get treated as flawless victim.

Good engineering.

Then four weeks later, my VP called.

“Eloin.”

“Yes?”

“The Senior Director panel voted.”

I stopped breathing.

“You’re promoted.”

I laughed.

Then cried.

“London?”

“Optional six-month rotation, not mandatory.”

I had assumed eighteen months. Plans changed.

I said:

“I’ll think.”

Then:

“Take your time.”

No husband deciding.

No mother-in-law.

Mine.

I chose not to go immediately because divorce and legal work.

Six months later, I went for twelve weeks.

Not to flee.

Because I wanted.

Then Northstar’s claim against Lorelai.

Damaged equipment plus forensic/recovery and deployment-related direct costs.

Not eight million contract.

They did not pretend she owed whole project value.

The insurer pursued approximately $18,700 documented property/recovery losses.

The criminal case involved intentional property damage and misdemeanor assault/shove? The prompt says she shoved Eloin when trying to rise. In real story, Lorelai kicked laptop and maybe shoved? Yes, we can say a living-room camera? We didn't. Witnesses Thatcher/Brandon. She had shoved me shoulder when I tried to pick up. I hadn't focused.

Prosecutor offered plea.

Lorelai initially refused.

Then video? No video. Brandon and Thatcher witnesses. She admitted breaking laptop publicly. Northstar had physical.

She pleaded guilty to felony? Laptop value ~5k, state threshold maybe felony criminal mischief, plus misdemeanor harassment/assault. Let's make criminal mischief/property destruction and misdemeanor assault.

Sentence:

Probation.

Community service.

Anger-management.

Restitution.

No prison because no prior record, no bodily injury, property offense.

She hated probation more than jail idea.

Because it required reporting.

Then civil restitution paid from her own funds.

No company.

Good.

Then Thatcher.

He was not charged.

He had not ordered laptop destruction.

He was a terrible husband, not necessarily criminal.

That distinction mattered.

Divorce would handle.

Then Lorelai told relatives I “pressed charges.”

Not exactly.

Northstar reported property damage.

Police investigated.

Prosecutor charged.

I cooperated.

I did not control.

Then my aunt? No need.

Lorelai’s friends began seeing court documents.

She hated.

Image.

Then she tried to blame Brandon for dog.

He said:

“My dog made mess. You broke laptop.”

Simple.

Family narratives collapsing.

Then Thatcher called:

“Congratulations on promotion.”

News traveled through LinkedIn.

“Thank you.”

“I always knew you’d get it.”

I nearly laughed.

“Did you?”

“Of course.”

“Then why tell your mother to keep me downstairs because London transfer was getting real?”

Silence.

Brandon had disclosed.

Then:

“I was afraid.”

“Of what?”

“You leaving.”

“So you made leaving easier.”

He had no answer.

That became theme.

People trying to prevent abandonment by making departure necessary.
