Chapter 15 - The Promotion Everyone Feared

Senior Director changed less than Cole family imagined.

More meetings.

More responsibility.

Better pay.

Not magic freedom.

My compensation rose to around $285,000 plus bonus/equity.

I did not tell Lorelai.

I did not have to.

I maxed retirement.

Bought modest condo after divorce.

Not villa.

Two bedrooms.

One office.

No Persian rug.

I laughed when realized.

Then London rotation.

I led rollout.

Came home.

Northstar asked whether I wanted permanent move.

I said no.

Why?

I liked my city.

Choice.

Thatcher had feared I would choose career over him.

But the career never demanded that choice.

His family did.

Then I began dating two years later.

Slow.

A product attorney named Michael Grant? Avoid Grant. Owen Price, thirty-eight, widowed? Maybe no need. We can mention later, not central.

I kept finances separate.

Not because damaged.

Because transparent systems can still be loving.

Then one date asked:

“Why do you have a weird rule about not sharing bank accounts?”

“I don't. I have a rule about understanding them.”

Good.

Eventually relationship serious with Owen Price, an architect.

We moved in after years.

Created household account.

Each contributed agreed amount.

No mystery sweeps.

That ordinary system felt romantic.

Then Cole Heritage repayment statements kept arriving quarterly.

I reviewed like creditor.

Not family.

By year three, principal below $220,000.

Company doing better.

Revenue $8.1m.

Outside CEO.

No owner distributions beyond policy.

Lorelai had stepped off board.

She still owned units.

Received proper distributions only when declared.

No card declines.

Then Thatcher bought smaller home.

Not bankrupt.

He still earned good salary.

Family wealthy, just grounded.

That outcome mattered.

I did not need them ruined.

I needed not be responsible.

Then one day Brandon sent screenshot of company annual report.

Message:

We finally have 90 days cash without line. Nina says you’d appreciate.

I did.

Good.

Then:

Mom still hates Nina.

Even better.

May you like

He sent laughing emoji.

Some relationships returned in fragments.
