Chapter 14 - The Divorce Judgment

The divorce was final fourteen months after laptop night.
No courtroom screaming.
No judge awarding me Cole Heritage.
No Lorelai dragged away.
Just paperwork.
House already sold.
Assets allocated.
Business interests preserved under prenup, subject loan repayment.
Joint liabilities divided.
No children between Thatcher and me, so no custody.
That simplified.
The judge asked whether settlement voluntary.
“Yes.”
Thatcher:
“Yes.”
Then done.
Outside courthouse, we stood awkwardly.
He said:
“I’m sorry.”
“For?”
He knew my rule now.
“Laptop night.”
“Specific.”
He smiled sadly.
“I’m sorry I made your mother-in-law’s feelings more important than your work and safety.”
Then:
“I’m sorry I treated your salary like company infrastructure.”
Then:
“I’m sorry I knew the business depended on you and didn’t explain because I was afraid you’d say no.”
That was big.
Then:
“And I’m sorry I told Mom you might leave instead of talking to you about being scared.”
I swallowed.
“Thank you.”
He looked hopeful for half second.
Then let go.
“Do you forgive me?”
“Yes.”
His eyes filled.
“Does that mean—”
“No.”
He nodded.
“I know.”
Forgiveness not remarrying.
Then:
“Can we be friends?”
“Not now.”
“Ever?”
“I don’t know.”
Good.
Then he said:
“I read page fourteen.”
I laughed.
“Finally.”
“All eighteen pages.”
“Personal growth.”
He laughed too.
Then we left opposite directions.
Months later, he mailed my old wedding photo album.
No note.
I kept.
Not because regret.
Because marriage existed.
No need erase.
Then I learned Thatcher had started therapy alone.
Brandon told me, not requested.
I did not track.
His growth no longer my assignment.
Then Lorelai's probation ended.
She requested through Naomi permission to write.
I agreed.
Letter arrived.
Long.
First sentence:
I was wrong to destroy your laptop.
Then:
I was more wrong to believe your work, money, and time became family property because you married my son.
That surprised.
Then:
I called your independence selfish because I was afraid of what would happen if this family had to stand without it.
There.
Then:
It did stand.
Yes.
Then:
I am sorry I made you prove that by leaving.
I read twice.
No demand.
Then final:
I do not expect relationship.
Good.
I wrote:
I forgive you. I’m not ready for contact.
She answered through Naomi:
Understood.
May you like
No repeated calls.
Change can look boring.
