Chapter 16 - Lorelai and Me

Five years after laptop night, I agreed to coffee with Lorelai.

Public café.

No attorney.

She arrived early.

Simpler clothes.

Still elegant.

“Eloin.”

“Lorelai.”

She looked at me for long time.

“You look happy.”

“I am.”

“Good.”

Then silence.

She said:

“I still hate that you left Thatcher.”

I almost laughed.

“At least honest.”

“I think you could have stayed and still fixed finances.”

“Maybe.”

She looked surprised.

“Then why not?”

“Because I didn’t want to stay.”

That was enough.

Then:

“Did you ever love him?”

“Yes.”

“I thought you used him.”

“For what?”

She looked embarrassed.

“Family status.”

I laughed.

“My salary was higher than his.”

“I know that now.”

Then:

“I thought everyone wanted what I had because I had spent my life fighting to keep it.”

Interesting.

“What did you have?”

“Family.”

She looked down.

“Company.”

“House.”

“Control.”

There.

Then:

“Why laptop?”

“I wanted to humiliate you.”

Direct.

I appreciated.

“I wanted you to clean the rug because I wanted proof I could still tell you what to do.”

Not dog.

Hierarchy.

Then:

“When you refused, I broke the thing you used to escape me.”

My stomach tightened.

That was real motive.

Not career sabotage calculated.

Control impulse.

Then:

“I am ashamed.”

I nodded.

“Good.”

She almost smiled.

“Still sharp.”

“Still me.”

Then she asked:

“Do you forgive?”

“Yes.”

“Trust?”

“No.”

She nodded.

“Fair.”

Then:

“Do you hate me?”

“No.”

That surprised both.

I no longer spent emotional energy.

Then she asked whether she could invite me to Brandon’s engagement dinner someday.

I said:

“Ask when real.”

Not promise.

She accepted.

Then when Brandon got engaged two years later, invitation came.

I attended.

Thatcher was there.

We said hello.

No scene.

Lorelai did not seat me beside him.

Progress.

Then at dinner Winston? Dog had died later, maybe not yet. Timing could be before death. He lay under table, trained, no accidents.

I scratched his ears.

Lorelai noticed.

Neither mentioned rug.

No need.

Then at end she said:

“Thank you for coming.”

“You’re welcome.”

Relationship became occasional.

Not mother-daughter.

Not family restoration.

May you like

Civil warmth.

Enough.
