Chapter 19 - Michael Comes Home to Nothing He Owned
Michael did not come home.
That phrase mattered.
The house was no longer his.
Marriage over.
Company access gone.
Sarah not there.
He rented a one bedroom apartment near his probation office.
Worked in warehouse operations for a regional food distributor.
Not executive.
No company funds.
No family job.
He had to build references again.
Then court reviewed contact.
Michael requested supervised visits with Olivia.
I did not oppose entirely.
My lawyer asked:
“Are you sure?”
“No.”
Good answer.
But Olivia had benefited from video contact.
Therapist believed controlled in person meetings could be appropriate if Michael remained accountable and did not manipulate.
So:
One hour monthly.
Professional supervision.
Neutral center.
No Sarah.
No discussion of custody.
No gifts beyond modest approved.
First visit.
Olivia entered holding Bean? Can't bring cat. Stuffed purple rabbit.
Michael stood.
Did not move toward her.
“Hi.”
She hugged him.
I cried in hallway where she could not see.
Not because reunion.
Because my child loved someone who had failed her.
That is hard.
Visit went well.
Then second.
Third.
Michael never blamed me.
Never said:
Mom kept me away.
That mattered more than toys.
Then he asked court for increased time after six months.
Therapist recommended gradual.
Two hours supervised.
Then community visit.
No overnight.
No rush.
He accepted.
Could he ever become full co-parent?
Maybe.
Not soon.
Then restitution.
Michael sold remaining rental interest.
Worked.
Paid.
He also signed civil consent permanently barring him from officer role at Cedar & Bloom.
Already fired.
Symbolic.
Then Sarah’s release came later.
She moved into subsidized senior? At 60s, perhaps rental apartment near her sister Carol in Ohio? Keep local maybe one hour away. Her conditions included no contact with Olivia without permission/court.
She asked Rachel to see Tyler.
Rachel said no initially.
Sarah replied:
“I understand.”
That surprised.
Then a year later Tyler requested a therapist supervised meeting.
He wanted to ask:
“Why did you make me favorite?”
Sarah answered:
“Because I thought boys carried families.”
“Why?”
“My father told me.”
“Was he right?”
“No.”
Then:
“Did you love Olivia?”
Sarah cried.
“I did not know how to love her without comparing.”
Not great.
Then:
“Do you now?”
“I care about her. But she does not owe me anything.”
Tyler accepted.
No hug.
Then Rachel met Sarah alone.
They talked childhood.
No instant repair.
Limited phone calls later.
Then Sarah requested to send Olivia birthday card.
I asked Olivia.
“Do you want one from Grandma Sarah?”
She thought.
“Can I read and throw away?”
“Yes.”
Card:
Happy birthday. I am sorry. I hope you have a happy day.
Olivia read.
Put in drawer.
Did not throw.
No contact request.
