Chapter 10 - The Husband Who Stayed in the Middle

Michael asked for a supervised conversation with me through attorneys.

I refused first.

Then agreed with Rebecca present.

No Olivia.

No home.

Conference room.

He looked exhausted.

Good.

Not punishment.

Reality.

“Emily.”

“What did you want?”

“To explain.”

“Explain what?”

“I never wanted Mom to hit Olivia.”

“I know.”

His face changed.

“You believe that?”

“The video proves you told her not to touch the kids.”

He exhaled.

Then:

“But you kept watching after she did.”

“Yes.”

“You said good.”

His eyes filled.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“I panicked.”

“No.”

He looked down.

“I saw the clip I had been waiting for.”

There.

Then he started crying.

I did not comfort.

“I thought if I could prove you were violent, you’d stop threatening to fire me.”

“I never threatened.”

“You asked about Bright Vale.”

“That was my company.”

“I knew audit would expose everything.”

“So instead of telling me you stole money, you built a camera trap.”

“Yes.”

“Why custody?”

He looked away.

“Leverage.”

The word was almost inaudible.

“Say it.”

“Leverage.”

My stomach turned.

“You were going to use Olivia.”

“I love her.”

“That doesn’t answer.”

He rubbed his face.

“I thought if I had temporary custody and the house, you’d negotiate instead of destroying me.”

“Negotiate what?”

“Separation. Company repayment. Everything.”

“You wanted me afraid.”

“Yes.”

Finally.

Then:

“Did you want divorce?”

“I thought you would leave when audit came out.”

“So you planned first.”

“Yes.”

“Did you ever consider simply telling me?”

“Every day.”

“Then why didn’t you?”

“Because I knew how you looked at people who lied to the company.”

I laughed bitterly.

“I married one.”

He flinched.

Then Sarah.

“Why involve your mother?”

“She hated you enough to do it.”

That sentence ended something.

Not because I had not known.

Because he admitted choosing the person most likely to hurt me.

Then:

“Did you think she’d hurt Olivia emotionally?”

He hesitated.

“Yes.”

“What does that mean?”

“I thought she’d favor Tyler. Take food. Insult you. Make you angry.”

“So you were willing to let our daughter be humiliated as long as she wasn’t hit.”

His face collapsed.

“Yes.”

I stood.

Meeting over.

Michael whispered:

“I’m sorry.”

“I know.”

Then:

“Can you forgive me?”

“No.”

Not then.

Maybe never.

He nodded.

I left.

Outside, Rebecca asked:

“Are you filing?”

“Divorce?”

“Yes.”

I looked through conference glass at Michael.

“Yes.”

No hesitation.

Then family court.

Temporary orders.

Because Michael’s involvement in a staged incident involving Olivia was under investigation, the court ordered supervised parenting time pending evaluation.

Not no father forever.

Not automatic custody loss.

Safety first.

Michael agreed rather than contest urgently.

I remained in house with Olivia.

Sarah barred.

The house title issue would be resolved later.

Then Michael’s first supervised visit.

Olivia was two.

She did not understand conspiracy.

She saw Daddy.

Ran toward him.

Michael fell to knees and cried.

That hurt me.

Love was real.

Danger was real.

Both.

He held her.

Supervisor watched.

Michael did not discuss me.

Good.

Then at end Olivia said:

“Grandma bad.”

Michael froze.

“What?”

“Grandma hit.”

He whispered:

“Yes.”

Then:

“Daddy watch.”

He closed his eyes.

The toddler had absorbed more than we wanted.

Continue to the next part: Michael admits he used Olivia as leverage, and Emily files for divorce even while their daughter still runs into her father’s arms during supervised visits.
