Chapter 9 - The Video That Stayed Private

Jenna wanted to post the banquet video.
Not for fame.
Anger.
“People are still saying you attacked Aunt Barbara for no reason.”
I understood.
“Don’t.”
“Why?”
“Because Lila is in it.”
That ended.
The video remained evidence.
Not content.
Ryan’s family eventually saw enough through court records and direct witnesses.
Some believed me.
Some believed Barbara.
Some said both sides.
I stopped caring.
Then a local gossip page somehow received the cropped clip.
Only me shoving Barbara and slapping Ryan.
The headline:
MOM ATTACKS GRANDMA AT TODDLER BIRTHDAY.
I wanted scream.
Denise sent takedown request? Public clip maybe not easily. We could issue statement through counsel. But no need overdo. User wants drama. Could have Jenna threaten full video, but Emily refuses publicizing child. Instead banquet manager provides statement to site? They update after legal notice. Let's make:
My attorney sent a short factual correction with court disposition and demanded Lila's face blurred. Site removed post rather than litigate.
I did not release full video.
That choice frustrated Jenna.
“Then people think she won.”
“Barbara has probation and no contact.”
“But online…”
“I don’t raise my daughter online.”
Jenna nodded.
That became theme.
Then Barbara started attending therapy.
Court ordered anger program, but she continued privately after.
We knew only because Ryan mentioned.
No immediate relevance.
Then Lila turned three.
Small birthday.
My apartment? I moved from Megan's to a rented townhouse? Let's set after separation I stayed in marital apartment? We hadn't defined. Ryan moved out. We can say I retained apartment lease. No issue.
Six people.
Cupcakes.
No banquet.
Lila touched frosting before song.
Everyone laughed.
I cried in bathroom.
Megan found.
“Bad?”
“Good.”
Then Lila asked:
“Grandma come?”
I froze.
“Not today.”
“Why?”
“She made an unsafe choice.”
“Hit?”
“Yes.”
“Grandma bad?”
I took time.
“She did a bad thing.”
No permanent label.
Then:
“Daddy bad?”
“No.”
“He let?”
Children go straight.
“Daddy did not stop her. He should have.”
Then:
“Daddy sorry?”
“Yes.”
She accepted.
At three, truth could be simple.
Then Ryan came later for his own birthday time.
Separate.
He did not ask to combine.
Good.
He gave Lila small bicycle.
Too big? Fine.
No Barbara gifts.
At least none presented.
Then one envelope arrived at my apartment.
From Barbara.
I did not open.
Sent to Denise.
It contained:
I am sorry you chose to destroy Lila’s relationship with her grandmother over one mistake.
Not apology.
Then:
I hope one day you stop using her as punishment.
I laughed.
Denise asked:
“Respond?”
“No.”
We preserved.
Then Barbara sent same sentiment to Ryan.
He replied:
Do not contact Emily. Do not send gifts to Lila through me. The boundary remains.
Barbara:
You sound exactly like her.
Ryan:
I’m her father.
That line.
He was finally centering role, not son.
Then custody expanded.
Alternate weekends daytime and one overnight.
Ryan did well.
School/daycare later said transitions stable.
He stopped asking me for reassurance after every visit.
Parenting app became boring.
Pickup 5.
Medicine in side pocket.
She ate at 4.
Normal.
That was success.
Then my own anger program certificate and dismissed case remained in file.
I did not hide from Lila forever? Not now.
At three no.
Later.
Then Ryan asked me one thing.
“Can Jenna send me original video?”
I hesitated.
“Why?”
“I need to watch it.”
“For court?”
“No.”
Then:
“My therapist says I keep talking about moment without watching what I did.”
The video showed him.
Sitting.
Barbara slaps.
Emily moves.
Ryan freezes.
I sent through attorneys? Jenna consented, clip not distributed? He already had access in case likely. But maybe copy restricted. He could view with attorney.
Later he wrote:
I watched myself.
Then:
I looked at Mom before I looked at Lila.
That was true.
Then:
I think I finally understand why you left.
I did not reply.
May you like
No need.
Continue to the next part: Emily refuses to turn Lila’s assault into public revenge, while Ryan watches the full video and sees that his first instinct was to check his mother instead of his daughter.
