Chapter 20 - Ryan’s Final Apology

Ryan and I rarely spoke after Lila married.
No schedule.
No parenting app.
No school forms.
The machinery that kept us connected was gone.
At first, strange.
Then peaceful.
We still saw at birthdays.
Holidays chosen by Lila.
Grandchildren later.
But no daily.
One afternoon Ryan asked for coffee.
I almost said no.
Then agreed.
He was fifty.
Glasses again, obviously.
He placed them on table and laughed.
“I still hate stew.”
I smiled despite myself.
Then he said:
“I want to apologize once without making you respond.”
I sighed.
“We’ve done this.”
“Not like this.”
I let.
“I staged a confrontation because I believed marriage gave me right to keep you from leaving before I was ready.”
Good.
“I treated your separate account as betrayal.”
“I treated your packed bag as evidence against you instead of asking why you needed it.”
“I used Mom’s anger because I knew it could provoke you.”
“I told Jenna to stop filming because I wanted context missing.”
“I drafted custody papers before any violence happened.”
“I did not plan for Mom to hit Lila.”
I nodded.
“I wrote that she should not touch her.”
“Yes.”
“Then when she did, I failed anyway.”
He looked down.
“I checked Mom first.”
“Yes.”
“I followed you to parking lot and asked you to protect Mom’s reputation.”
“Yes.”
“I filed cropped video even though I knew there was more context.”
“Yes.”
There.
Then:
“I used your slap against me without admitting I helped create the situation.”
“Yes.”
“Your slap was still wrong.”
“Yes.”
He looked surprised.
“I know.”
Then:
“I’m sorry.”
I took time.
“I forgive you.”
He cried.
Then:
“I already did years ago.”
He laughed through tears.
“Could’ve told me.”
“You didn’t need my permission to become better.”
That line.
Then he asked:
“Do you think I became good father?”
“Yes.”
His eyes closed.
Not perfect.
Good.
Then:
“Do you think I was good husband?”
“No.”
He nodded.
Fair.
Then:
“Do you hate me?”
“No.”
“Love?”
“Not how you mean.”
He smiled.
“Okay.”
Then we drank coffee.
No reconciliation.
No secret longing.
Two adults who once built life and broke it.
Then Olivia arrived later to pick him up because car shop? We greeted.
Normal.
Then Barbara health declined.
Not immediate death.
Age.
She had heart issues and arthritis.
Lila visited.
Ryan cared without moving her into his home? He arranged support, helped.
Barbara did not demand.
At seventy eight, she moved into senior community by choice.
Ryan said:
“She asked my opinion.”
Then:
“And listened when I said I didn’t know.”
We laughed.
Then Barbara asked Lila to help sort possessions.
She found dress from banquet.
Formal blue jacket stained? Maybe cleaned.
No cake residue.
Lila held.
“Is this?”
Barbara knew.
“Yes.”
“Why keep?”
“I didn’t know what to do with it.”
Lila said:
“Donate.”
Barbara did.
No shrine.
Then one box had old birthday invitation.
Lila took? No.
She threw away.
May you like
Past not relic.
Continue to the next part: With Lila grown, Ryan gives one final complete apology and Emily finally tells him he became a good father even though he was never a good husband to her.
