Chapter 12 - What Jenna Never Posted

Jenna became one of my closest friends after the banquet.

Funny.

Before, she was Ryan’s cousin I saw on holidays.

After, she became the person who preserved truth because she forgot to stop recording.

She carried guilt.

“If I had stopped filming like Ryan asked…”

“But you didn’t.”

“I almost did.”

“Then thank your bad attention span.”

She laughed.

Then one day she told me something.

“Ryan asked me to delete.”

“When?”

“Morning after.”

My stomach tightened.

“What did he say?”

“That the video made everyone look bad.”

“Did he threaten?”

“No.”

“Offer money?”

“No.”

“He begged.”

Then:

“He said Mom didn’t mean to hit Lila.”

Interesting.

Then:

“He told me if you saw setup, marriage was over.”

He knew.

Then Jenna said:

“I told him you deserved see.”

“What did he say?”

“He said, ‘You don’t understand. I was trying to keep my family together.’”

Again.

Control framed as preservation.

Then she had saved his voicemail.

Not needed legally now.

Cases done.

But she asked whether I wanted.

“No.”

“Really?”

“Yes.”

We had enough.

Then she deleted her personal copy after preserving court certified evidence.

I did same eventually.

The full video remained in legal records.

I did not need it on phone forever.

For months I watched.

Frame by frame.

Barbara’s hand.

My face.

Ryan’s eyes.

It became self punishment.

Dr. Lawson, from my anger course, once asked:

“What are you looking for?”

“A second where Ryan moves.”

“Does he?”

“No.”

“Then stop expecting footage to change.”

That hurt.

I deleted local copy.

Then Lila turned five.

She started kindergarten.

Ryan now had every other weekend and one midweek dinner.

We shared legal custody.

Transitions mostly boring.

Then Ryan met someone.

A woman named Olivia Shaw.

Teacher.

He told me before introducing Lila.

“I’ve been seeing Olivia six months.”

“Why tell me?”

“Parenting plan.”

Good.

Then:

“Mom has not met her.”

I was surprised.

“Why?”

“I wanted relationship that wasn’t immediately evaluated by Mom.”

Growth.

Olivia knew history.

All.

Before meeting Lila.

She asked to meet me first.

I declined initially.

Then agreed public coffee.

She said:

“I’m not here to replace you.”

Standard.

Then:

“Ryan told me what he did at birthday.”

Specific.

“He told me he staged confrontation.”

Good.

Then:

“He says if he ever starts making his mother part of our relationship decisions, I should leave.”

I almost laughed.

“That sounds like him.”

Then:

“Do you trust him?”

Not my job.

“I trust him with Lila under current arrangement.”

That was all.

Olivia accepted.

Then Barbara learned.

She called Olivia without permission.

Ryan had not given number? She found social media and school? Too intrusive. Could happen. She sent message.

Olivia told Ryan.

Ryan blocked Barbara for three months.

Not forever.

Boundary consequence.

Barbara did not contact Olivia again.

Then Lila liked Olivia.

That hurt me unexpectedly.

Not jealousy of woman.

Fear of being replaced.

I recognized irony.

Control can grow from fear.

I did not punish.

When Lila said:

“Olivia braided my hair.”

I said:

“Pretty.”

Then cried later.

Normal.

Then Ryan and I attended coparenting session because joint custody conflicts.

He said:

“I’m afraid Emily will never believe I changed.”

Therapist asked me:

“Do you?”

I said:

“I believe he changed some things.”

Ryan nodded.

Enough.

Then:

“Do you need her to forgive?”

Ryan:

“No.”

Good.

Then:

“Do you expect friendship?”

“No.”

Then:

“What do you want?”

“To be a father without needing my mother to tell me how.”

That was the right goal.

Then Jenna asked if she could delete her raw banquet video from personal storage.

I said:

“Please.”

She did.

The video had done its job.

May you like

Truth did not need to remain open wound.

Continue to the next part: Ryan begins a new relationship without letting Barbara supervise it, while Emily learns that protecting Lila also means allowing safe people into her daughter’s life.
