Chapter 24 - The Glasses in the Stew
Years later, the story became one sentence at family gatherings.
“Remember when Ryan’s glasses landed in stew?”
Ryan hated.
Then eventually laughed.
At Lila’s fortieth birthday, Jacob told story badly.
“Mom says Aunt Lila’s second birthday was insane.”
Lila raised hand.
“Stop.”
Everyone quiet.
She said:
“It was not family comedy.”
Jacob apologized.
Then she smiled.
“But the glasses were objectively funny.”
Ryan groaned.
Everyone laughed.
That balance.
Not erase violence.
Not let violence own every memory.
Then Lila’s children asked.
She told age appropriate.
“Grandma Barbara hit me when I was little.”
Then:
“My mom got very angry and pushed her.”

“My dad had helped set up an argument because he was scared Mom would leave.”

Her daughter June asked:
“Who was bad?”
Lila said:

“Funny thing is context saved you.”

“And probably saved me.”
“How?”
“If cropped video had worked, maybe I would’ve gotten temporary custody and doubled down.”
I had thought.
Maybe.

“Mom would’ve felt justified.”
“Yes.”
“Lila would’ve grown around lie.”
That was worst.

“Jenna’s failure to stop recording changed us.”
I laughed.
“Never tell her. She’ll become unbearable.”
Then Jenna walked in? maybe not.
Then Emily's life with Thomas stable. At seventy? We'll save final.
Then one last official cleanup.
Family court records involving Lila as minor remained sealed or restricted.
Criminal diversion sealed.
Barbara’s misdemeanor record ended with her death, but public court.
No ongoing litigation.
No custody order because Lila adult.
No financial disputes.
No pending appeals.
No no contact orders needed.
Everything legal closed.
The only active relationship was by choice.
Then Lila asked me:
“Do you still call what you did revenge?”
“No.”
“What?”
“I left.”
Then:
“I told truth.”

“I let consequences happen.”
