Chapter 22 - Paige’s Daughter

Paige’s daughter, Emma, joined Whitmore Hospitality’s finance internship at twenty one.
Paige called.
“Do not help her.”
“I don’t work there.”
“You know everyone.”
“I will avoid knowing everyone.”
Emma applied through regular process.
Got in.
Then called me:
“Aunt Nora?”
I was not aunt technically.
Close enough.
“What?”
“I found something weird in vendor report.”
My body reacted before mind.
Old alarm.
Then I stopped.
“What kind?”
“A duplicate hotel linen charge.”
I almost laughed.
“Tell your supervisor.”
“That’s it?”
“Yes.”
“Don’t investigate?”
“You are intern.”
She sounded disappointed.
Then:
“What if fraud?”
“Then controls handle.”
There.
The lesson.
Not every anomaly requires a secret brass key.
Systems should work.
Emma reported.
It was duplicate invoice caused by vendor billing error.
Credit issued.
No crime.
Perfect.
Later she said:
“That was boring.”
“Most problems should be.”
Then she asked about Arthur.
“Was he scary?”
“Yes.”
“Nice?”
“Yes.”
“Did he know Grandma Lorraine would go to prison?”
“No.”
“Did he know Daniel would?”
“He feared.”
Then:
“Why didn’t he stop them?”
“He tried late.”
Then:
“Why late?”
“Because love makes people postpone consequences.”
Emma thought.
“That sounds bad.”
“Sometimes.”
Then:
“Isn’t forgiveness same?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Forgiveness can happen after consequence.”
Important.
Then Daniel overheard this at family lunch months later.
He said:
“Strongly recommend.”
We laughed.
No shame hidden.
Then Paige whispered to me:
“Look at us.”
“What?”
“Eating.”
Four dishes.
Everyone serving themselves.
Then:
“No one on knees.”
I smiled.
She remembered.
We all did.
Then I thought of sixty.
Lorraine’s age at birthday.
Mine approaching.
I did not want a big party.
Paige did.
“No.”
“Thirty people.”
“No.”
“Gold balloons.”
“I’ll disinherit you.”
“You’re not related.”
“Exactly.”
Then she said:
“Six dishes.”
I paused.
“Maybe.”
The number became joke.
Then real plan.
My sixtieth birthday.
Small dinner.
People I chose.
No staff required beyond caterer? Maybe cook partly. I decided potluck? No need.
Then I opened metal box.
Recipe cards.
Lorraine’s lemon cake.
Arthur’s favorite roast.
Paige’s pie.
I counted.
Six.
Fine.
Six dishes.
May you like
Not sixty.
No one proving anything.
