Chapter 15 - Daniel Returns

Daniel returned to society years later through structured reentry and supervised release.

Forty four.

Gray at temples.

Thinner.

He took a job as operations coordinator for a commercial kitchen equipment distributor.

Seventy four thousand dollars.

No treasury access.

No large signing authority.

Employer knew conviction.

He accepted restrictions.

Then restitution.

Most had been covered through earlier asset settlements and share repurchase.

Remaining payments structured.

He paid.

Then asked to meet me.

I said no.

A year later:

Yes.

Why?

I no longer felt I needed the meeting to produce anything.

That made me ready.

Mediator present.

Daniel sat across.

“Nora.”

“Daniel.”

“I want to say what I did without telling you why.”

Good.

“I stole from the company.”

“I used your credentials.”

“I created fake records.”

“I tried to make the board believe you were responsible.”

Then his face twisted.

“I pulled your hair because you embarrassed me by saying no.”

He stared at table.

“I helped Mom try to take the house.”

Then:

“I lied about Arthur.”

“How?”

“I told myself he loved you more.”

He cried.

“He trusted you in things he didn’t trust me in.”

“Yes.”

“He trusted me in operations.”

“Yes.”

“I erased that.”

“Yes.”

Then:

“Did he ever say he was proud of me?”

I thought.

Arthur bragged about Daniel opening three hotels during supply shortages.

Arthur praised his ability to remember employee names.

Arthur trusted him with crisis operations.

I told him.

Daniel covered his face.

“I spent years thinking he never saw me.”

“He saw you.”

Then:

“You stopped accepting evidence that didn’t fit your grievance.”

He nodded.

Then:

“Did you love me after birthday?”

“Yes.”

His eyes lifted.

“Why?”

“Feelings don’t stop on schedule.”

“Did you want me back?”

“No.”

He smiled sadly.

“Good.”

Then:

“Do you forgive me?”

“Yes.”

He cried.

I added:

“That doesn’t make us friends.”

“I know.”

Then:

“Thank you.”

For what?

I did not ask.

Maybe answer.

Maybe boundary.

Then he left.

No hug.

Over years, Daniel built a new career.

Coordinator.

Manager.

Regional operations director.

Never back to luxury hospitality.

One year, a supplier mistakenly issued a six figure rebate.

Daniel noticed.

Reported.

His boss tried to praise publicly.

Daniel declined.

“That’s just what you do.”

Good.

Then he remarried eventually.

A woman named Rebecca Cole, an occupational therapist.

He told her everything before engagement.

Prenup.

Separate finances.

No children together.

No secret.

Then Lorraine and Daniel began monthly lunches.

No company.

No money.

At first.

Then Arthur.

Then memories.

One day Paige told me Lorraine said:

“I miss the man before the fight over money.”

Maybe Arthur.

Maybe herself.

Both.

Then Daniel completed supervision.

Restitution satisfied.

No open federal obligations.

He sent one note.

All paid.

I wrote:

May you like

Good.

That was enough.
