Chapter 19 - Arthur’s Last Unopened File

Evelyn called after retirement.
“I found something.”
“What?”
“Arthur’s old personal drive backup.”
We had believed everything reviewed.
This was not hidden evidence.
Personal files.
Counsel had preserved and now finished classification.
One folder:
NORA.
I groaned.
“He needed hobbies.”
Inside:
Performance reviews.
Emails.
One video never used in case.
Arthur, six months before death.
Healthy enough to sit upright.
“Nora.”
Then:
“If you are seeing this, Evelyn is ignoring my instructions to stop finding things.”
I laughed.
Evelyn said:
“He knew me.”
Arthur continued.
“I want to tell you something that has nothing to do with Daniel.”
Pause.
“Do not make your life a rebuttal to this family.”
I stopped smiling.
“You are going to be tempted to run the company perfectly so nobody can say you wanted it.”
Then:
“You may give away money so nobody calls you greedy.”
Then:
“You may refuse another marriage so nobody can control you.”
He looked annoyed.
“That is still letting them decide.”
My eyes filled.
Then:
“Choose badly sometimes. At least let the mistake be yours.”
I laughed through tears.
Then:
“The eighteen percent is not compensation for surviving my family.”
He leaned closer.
“It is yours because I wanted it to be.”
Then:
“Daniel’s trust is not punishment. It is protection from Daniel as he is today.”
Then:
“If he changes, good.”
Then:
“If Lorraine changes, even better.”
Arthur sighed.
“I would rather be wrong about both.”
He had been partly wrong.
They did change.
Too late to undo.
Not too late to matter.
Then final:
“And Nora?”
“Yes, Arthur?”
The recording:
“Stop reading the books at dinner.”
I laughed.
Arthur had complained I reviewed hotel reports between courses.
Then:
“People are more interesting than margins.”
Screen black.
Evelyn sat silently.
Then:
“What do you want done with file?”
“Keep official estate records.”
“Personal video?”
I thought.
“Give me copy.”
I kept.
Not because evidence.
Because Arthur sounded alive.
Years later, I watched once more.
Then deleted from personal devices after ensuring family archive had authorized copy.
Not every memory needs duplication.
Then I looked at brass key.
Still in jewelry box.
May you like
What did I want?
I did not know yet.
