Chapter 10 - Lorraine’s Bargain
Lorraine refused the first plea offer.
Then second.
Her defense:
Daniel manipulated her.
She believed payments were lawful family distributions.
The company owed her.
Arthur had promised.
Then investigators showed the second ledger.
She said Arthur wrote it.
Handwriting evidence contradicted.
Then emails.
Then apartment.
Then Paige recording.
Then forged deed.
Then witness contact.
Her lawyer asked for recess.
Months later, Lorraine changed.
Why?
Daniel’s defense announced it would argue she created the initial structure.
That was true in part.
Mother and son could no longer protect each other without accepting more blame.
Lorraine negotiated.
She would plead guilty to wire fraud conspiracy, a money laundering count, and witness tampering.
She would testify truthfully.
No guaranteed sentence.
Then proffer.
I learned summary through victim counsel.
Lorraine admitted LJW.
Admitted concealing beneficial interest.
Admitted inflated fees.
Admitted using money for debts and Manhattan apartment.
Admitted helping create fake approvals.
Admitted knowing Daniel used my credentials.
Then birthday.
“Why sixty dishes?”
“I wanted to humiliate her.”
“Why?”
“Because she acted like Arthur trusted her more.”
Then:
“Did you tell Daniel to assault her?”
“No.”
“Did you tell him to force her out?”
“Yes.”
“Did you expect intimidation?”
“Yes.”
Then:
“Why?”
“To find the key.”
There.
Then:
“Did you know what box?”
“Yes.”
“How?”
“I saw Arthur use it years ago.”
Then:
“Did you know contents?”
“No.”
Then forged deed.
She admitted copying Arthur’s signature image.
Daniel assembled document.
They submitted after death.
Why?
“I believed house should be mine.”
“Did you know trust said otherwise?”
“Yes.”
Then:
“Why think it should be yours?”
“I gave Arthur thirty five years.”
That sentence.
Again.
Service transformed into ownership.
Then the first shell.
Lorraine admitted she told Peter Sloan:
Arthur is impossible about money.
She wanted private funds beyond marital trust.
Daniel helped.
At first to protect mother.
Then his own needs entered.
Restaurant losses.
Investment club.
Status.
Then my role.
“Why target Nora?”
Lorraine said:
“She made Daniel feel small.”
No.
Prosecutor corrected.
“How?”
“She was better at finance.”
There.
Then:
“Did Nora cause that?”
“No.”
Then Lorraine cried.
“Arthur praised her.”
“Did Arthur praise Daniel?”
“Yes.”
“What for?”
“Operations.”
Then:
“So why tell Daniel Arthur preferred Nora?”
Long silence.
“Because when Daniel was angry at Arthur, he came to me.”
That was the twist.
Lorraine had cultivated resentment to keep her son emotionally aligned.
Not causing his crimes.
Using wound.
Then:
“If I told him Arthur loved him, he might go back to his father.”
Possession.
Even of her son.
Then:
“Did you love Daniel?”
“Yes.”
“Did love give you right?”
“No.”
Perhaps first real no of her life.
Then she admitted a planned outside “investigation” after my suspension.
Goal:
Make finance controls look responsible.
Not necessarily accuse me of personal theft publicly.
Enough to force resignation.
Then Daniel becomes acting executive.
Then estate negotiations.
Then deed.
Then:
“Arthur caught us too early.”
Not:
We stopped.
Caught.
That phrase later mattered at sentencing.
Then Lorraine agreed to testify.
