Chapter 22 - Julian’s House

Julian bought a modest house near Caleb’s school.
Not mansion.
Three bedrooms.
Small yard.
Caleb chose his room color.
Green.
Overnight visits expanded to alternate weekends.
Joint legal custody?
No.
I retained final decision authority under decree.
But we consulted.
Julian had earned more time, not equal control automatically.
He never asked court to reopen.
That restraint mattered.
One Friday, Caleb called from Julian’s.
“Mom, Dad said Grandma wrote him.”
I froze.
“Did he show you?”
“No.”
“Good.”
“Can I know?”
“If it affects you, Dad should tell me first.”
Julian called later.
Constance had completed sentence and probation requirements.
She asked to see Caleb.
Julian replied:
Not unless Caleb asks and Elena agrees.
Good.
Constance did not file court petition.
Also good.
Caleb said no.
Matter ended.
Then Julian told me:
“I’m dating someone.”
I laughed.
“What?”
“Nothing. Good luck.”
“Her name is Sarah.”
“Do not introduce without therapist guidance and time.”
“I know.”
He waited six months.
Caleb eventually met Sarah.
She was a high school counselor.
Kind.
I did not need to like her.
Caleb did.
That was enough.

No evil stepmother twist.
Life does not need one.
