Chapter 14 - Julian’s Price

The trust court did not call the $600,000 distribution theft.

It had been authorized under the instrument.

But in settlement, Julian acknowledged receiving the distribution in circumstances tied to his agreement not to disclose the legitimate paternity report.

He agreed to repay $420,000 after accounting for amounts already taxed/used? Better full principal less already returned? Let's simplify: he agreed to repay $600,000 over five years, secured by his separate investment assets. Clean.

He also waived any claim to serve as trustee for Caleb’s subtrust.

That mattered.

At divorce mediation, Julian said:

“I don’t want trust control.”

Maya replied:

“You already don’t have it.”

He almost smiled.

“Fair.”

I asked:

“Why repay?”

“Because it bought my silence.”

“Yes.”

“I don’t want Caleb’s future built partly on that.”

That was the first time he framed money morally without mother.

We finalized divorce eighteen months after dinner.

I became Elena Marlow again? User has Elena Hartwell. Need decide maiden surname. Could change, but keep character consistent. Better she keeps Hartwell? Maybe not. We can say Elena retained Hartwell professionally for Caleb? But user specified Elena Hartwell. Let's keep Elena Hartwell after divorce. Fine.

Final custody:

Elena primary legal and physical custody.

Julian two supervised afternoons weekly initially, with step-up based on therapist.

No overnight until six months successful.

No contact between Caleb and Constance absent written agreement or future court order.

Arthur allowed contact at my discretion.

Julian must not discuss trust/litigation with Caleb.

Child support according to guidelines plus school/medical shares.

No drama.

The day decree entered, Julian stood outside courthouse.

“We’re done.”

“Yes.”

“I’m sorry.”

“I know.”

“Do you hate me?”

“Sometimes.”

He nodded.

Then:

“Do you think Caleb ever forgives me?”

“I don’t know.”

“What should I do?”

“Stop making forgiveness the goal.”

He looked at me.

“What is goal?”

“Be safe whether he forgives you or not.”

That answer surprised both of us.

He nodded.

I went home.

Caleb asked:

“Are you divorced?”

“Yes.”

“Does Dad still come soccer?”

“If you want.”

“Yes.”

“Okay.”

Then:

“Do we still have last name Hartwell?”

“Yes.”

“Can I change?”

“When older if you want.”

He thought.

“No. I’m going to make it mean something better.”

Seven.

My throat tightened.

“Sounds like work.”

“I’m good at work.”

“You complain about homework every night.”

“That’s different.”

May you like

Normal.

Finally.
