Chapter 21 - The Last Name

At ten, Caleb asked to change his name.

Not away from Hartwell entirely.

To:

Caleb Elena Hartwell? No, middle names. Maybe current Caleb Hartwell. He wanted Caleb Hartwell Marlow? We haven't established mother's maiden. Better avoid change. Instead he asks if Hartwell means he belongs to Constance. We can handle without legal change.

“Does Hartwell mean Grandma owns me?”

“No.”

“It feels like her name.”

“It’s your dad’s too.”

“And Arthur.”

“Yes.”

“And me.”

“Yes.”

He thought.

“Then I keep it.”

“Why?”

“To make it not hers.”

That was his choice.

He joined school robotics club.

Started bringing friends home.

Stopped hiding food.

That last one took longest.

After the dinner, I found crackers in his bedroom drawer.

Therapist said food insecurity can happen after humiliation even without prolonged deprivation.

We did not punish.

Kept accessible snack basket.

By ten, the drawer stopped.

One evening he threw away stale bread.

I watched.

He caught me.

“What?”

“Nothing.”

“You’re doing Mom face.”

“What face?”

“Emotional.”

“Rude.”

May you like

He laughed.

Life returned in ordinary insults.
