Chapter 4 - Evelyn’s Version of the Story

Evelyn Mercer returned from Europe nine days after leaving.
Not seventy four.
The investigation had become public.
Her attorney arranged a voluntary interview.
She denied knowing Jason planned to leave me trapped.
She denied knowing he removed my medication.
Then detectives showed her Rachel’s email.
Jason has my medication again.
Please tell him to bring it back.
I am not confused.
I am afraid.
Evelyn’s reply:
Rachel, I will speak to him. Please stop using words like afraid. Jason loves you and is under enormous pressure.
Then Jason:
Handled.
Evelyn:
Good. She needs reassurance, not an audience.
Rachel’s notebook later said one bottle returned.
Her emergency medication remained missing.
Evelyn read the entry.
Her face collapsed.
“I didn’t know.”
Mara’s voice hardened.
“You did know enough.”
Evelyn did not answer.
Then my messages.
Two weeks before the trip I texted her:
Jason keeps taking my pharmacy card. Can you tell him to stop treating me like I can’t manage myself?
Evelyn:
Let him help. Marriage requires trust.
One day before Europe:
Jason:
Claire is staying home.
Evelyn:
Is that safe?
Jason:
She has all her meds.
Evelyn:
Then leave her alone. She turns concern into drama.
She was cruel.
Dismissive.
Wrong.
But that message also suggested Jason lied to her.
Then:
Evelyn:
Did Claire agree to seventy four days?
Jason:
She doesn’t get a vote on everything.
No answer followed.
“Why didn’t you call me?” I asked.
Evelyn looked at me through the conference room glass.
“Because I thought he meant the vacation.”
“You knew I was staying.”
“Yes.”
“You knew I was sick.”
“Yes.”
“And you accepted that sentence.”
She looked down.
“Yes.”
Then Natalie.
Jason’s sister had been vicious too.
But her messages from Paris told another story.
Natalie:
Jason, I keep thinking about Claire alone.
Jason:
Stop.
Natalie:
Does she have her injections?
Jason:
Yes.
Natalie:
Call her.
Jason:
Phone is off because she wants rest.
Natalie:
That’s weird.
Jason:
Drop it.
She did.
That was her failure.
Not the same as planning.
Then Mercer Family Holdings records.
Evelyn’s company paid the private investigator following Mara.
It also paid premiums on a life insurance policy covering me.
Original coverage:
Eight hundred thousand dollars.
I remembered signing.
Mortgage protection.
Then eleven months later:
Coverage increased to two point four million.
I did not remember approving.
Portal login originated from our house.
Authentication code went to my phone.
Jason often kept my phone beside him at night.
Then a verification call.
A woman confirmed the increase.
Not me.
Voice comparison had not been completed.
Premiums came from Mercer Family Holdings.
Did Evelyn know?
Her accounting staff automatically paid family insurance invoices.
Possible.
Then my attorney asked:
“Why was Evelyn contingent beneficiary?”
She claimed standard family planning.
If Jason died before me, insurance money would pass through family structure.
Maybe.
Then another document.
My medical underwriting questionnaire.
Answered:
No hospitalization within previous twelve months.
False.
I had been hospitalized eight months earlier.
Who filled it out?
Jason.
That could jeopardize coverage itself.
A man planning a clean insurance murder would have made a strange mistake.
Evidence did not support one simple motive.
Maybe money.
Maybe control.
Maybe both.
Then investigators examined Rachel’s old policy.
Jason received roughly three hundred thousand after debts.
Not life changing for Mercer family wealth.
Again.
The pattern mattered more than the payout.
Then Mercer Family Holdings revealed another payment.
Thirty five thousand dollars.
One week before Europe.
Recipient:
North Gate Household Services.
Purpose:
RESIDENTIAL CLEARANCE.
I felt sick.
“What is residential clearance?”
A legitimate luxury home management service.
They prepared houses for long vacancies.
Security.
Mail holds.
Utility adjustments.
Window locks.
Vehicle storage.
Exactly what Jason used against me.
Their work order said:
RESIDENCE UNOCCUPIED FOR 74 DAYS.

I was still inside.
Continue to the next part: Jason used a legitimate luxury home service to make the house nearly impossible to escape, and one technician left a warning after discovering Claire’s medication in a supposedly empty residence.
