Chapter 3 - Before I Met My Husband

I remembered the gala.
Not Jason.
The room.
Crystal chandeliers.
A waterfront ballroom.
A charity auction.
Adrian standing across the room with his jacket open and two men behind him pretending they were not security.
At the time, Adrian and I existed inside a relationship neither of us named properly.
He wanted more.
I wanted normal.
Adrian’s life frightened me.
So I kept stepping backward until eventually he stopped asking me to stay.
Rachel’s notebook brought that night back differently.
Met Claire Bennett.
Adrian watches her like the room disappears.
Then:
Jason noticed.
Asked where she works.
Asked why she left early.
Asked if she is sick.
I had left because of a flare.
Jason had noticed that too.
Then:
Jason says men like Adrian like rescuing broken women because it makes them feel powerful.
Years later, Jason said something almost identical to me.
“People love sick women until helping stops making them feel noble.”
I thought it was an insult invented during our marriage.
It was older.
Then another notebook entry.
Jason asked if Claire has family money.
Mara stared at me.
“Do you?”
“Not enough to matter.”
My father left a modest trust.
Medical expenses had eaten part of it.
Nothing that explained Jason’s interest.
Then Adrian said:
“He was watching you because of me.”
Maybe.
Jason had been jealous of Adrian before knowing me.
Why?
At the gala, Adrian had publicly confronted a businessman connected to Jason’s employer.
Nothing violent.
A contract dispute.
Jason apparently hated being ignored by men more powerful than him.
Rachel wrote:
Jason keeps talking about Vale.
Says men like him only look powerful because people are afraid.
Then:
Says Claire makes him human.
My stomach turned.
Had Jason later approached me partly because I was connected to Adrian?
We needed evidence.
Not assumption.
Then Mara explained why Rachel wrote Adrian’s name.
Rachel believed if something happened to her and Jason ever approached me, Adrian might remember Jason from the gala.
She wanted someone to warn me.
But she never gave Mara the notebook.
She hid it.
Why?
Fear.
Shame.
The same reasons I never told anyone Jason controlled my money.
Then Detective Bennett brought Rachel’s original death file.
One report described medication.
At scene, investigators found an empty bottle three months old.
But pharmacy records showed Jason collected a newer bottle five days before Rachel died.
That newer bottle was not located.
Jason said Rachel must have moved it.
No proof otherwise.
Then Rachel’s insurance.
Seven hundred fifty thousand dollar policy.
Jason primary beneficiary.
But most of the payout covered business debt and medical bills.
He did receive money.
Not enough to prove motive.
Then Detective Bennett warned:
“We are not calling Rachel’s death homicide because of similarities.”
Mara nodded.
“I know.”
That distinction mattered.
Then Adrian asked:
“Who attacked Mara?”
Police had already identified the man.
Evan Pike.
Licensed private investigator.
He admitted entering Mara’s apartment without permission to retrieve documents.
Who hired him?
Mercer Family Holdings.
Jason’s family company.
The authorization came from:
Evelyn Mercer.
Jason’s mother.
My stomach tightened.
“She knew Mara was investigating?”
“Yes.”
Why?
Mara emailed Jason twice about Rachel.
Evelyn called the messages harassment.
She hired Pike to find out what Mara had.
Maybe to protect family reputation.
Maybe more.
Pike took Rachel’s original notebook.
Police recovered it from his vehicle after Adrian’s security intercepted him leaving the building and called law enforcement.
Adrian’s shirt was bloody because he helped restrain Pike after Pike struck one of his men with a tire iron.
Not an execution.
Not torture.
A messy confrontation.
Pike survived.
Then the notebook revealed something even Mara had never seen.
A page stuck beneath another.
Rachel:
Evelyn knows Jason has my emergency medication.
She says he is trying to help.
Then:
I told her I am afraid.
She told me not to use words like that.
I looked at Adrian.
Then Mara.
Jason’s mother had heard the warning.
May you like
Years before she mocked my illness from the passenger seat of the SUV.
Continue to the next part: Evelyn Mercer knew Rachel feared Jason’s control of her medication before Rachel died, but her private emails show she did something even more damaging than simply dismiss her.
