Chapter 11 - Robert’s Letter
Robert Mercer was controlling.
That did not make him wise.
Evelyn described a marriage built on money, silence, and long absences.
But even Robert recognized what Jason was becoming.
His letter dated seventeen years earlier.
Jason would have been seventeen? Wait Jason is 34 now, 17 years earlier age17, before Laura at 20. Too early. Better date 13 years earlier, age21, during Laura. Good.

What you are doing with Laura is not the 74 Day Reset Celeste described.
A reset is voluntary.
You are taking keys, controlling money, and then using her reaction as proof she cannot cope.

Then:
I built a family that confuses control with responsibility. That is partly on me. It does not excuse you.
That line surprised Evelyn.
She had never read it.
Robert recognized his own role.
Then the will.
Jason expected to inherit controlling interest in Mercer Family Holdings.
Robert instead placed most voting control with Evelyn until later age benchmarks and independent trustees.
Jason received economic benefits but less direct power.
He hated it.
Maybe that contributed to his obsession with control inside marriage.

Explanation.
Not excuse.
Then Jason kept Robert’s letter in storage with Rachel’s pharmacy receipts.
Why preserve something condemning him?
People keep the things that wound them.

After Rachel died, Jason wrote on the back:
He warned me too late.

Robert had been dead before Rachel.
Maybe Jason meant the warning came before he understood himself.
Or maybe he used it as excuse.

No murder charge announced.
No sensational certainty.
A medical expert reviewed the timeline.
If Rachel missed the amount of medication suggested by pharmacy records, her death could result.
Could she have forgotten or chosen not to take it?
Possible.
Could Jason have removed it?
Possible.
The new bottle in Mercer storage increased concern.
But Evelyn said she packed it after death.
No chain of custody from scene.
Weak.
Then one new witness.
Rachel’s neighbor, Denise Carter.
She remembered Jason visiting the townhouse two days before Rachel died.
That contradicted his claim he had already left for conference.
Phone location?
Old carrier records unavailable at full precision.
Credit card:
Gas station near Rachel’s town that evening.
Jason said employee used company card.
Possible.
Conference hotel check in occurred next morning.
So his alibi did not cover two days before death.
Could he have removed medicine then?
Maybe.
Still no direct proof.
Then Mara found a voicemail Rachel left her that night.
Old cloud backup.
Rachel:
“He came back.”
Mara stopped breathing.
Then:
“He says he forgot a file.”
Then whisper:
“He opened the medication drawer.”
The voicemail ended.
Mara had never received it because her old phone was damaged and cloud archive restored only now.
That was significant.
Jason had returned after supposedly leaving.
Then next morning:
He traveled to conference.
Rachel died two days later.
Now timeline tightened.
Then Jason’s lawyer argued he returned only for work papers.
No evidence he touched pills except Rachel’s whispered observation.
But Rachel independently recorded fear.
Then Adrian’s role remained controlled.
He never approached Jason.
He honored promise.
His men provided security only where I explicitly agreed.
He paid nothing for my legal case.
I did not want Jason claiming Adrian bought the witnesses.
Then one evening Adrian sat across from me in the restored living room.
The new front door was still unfinished around the frame.
“I should have stopped you from marrying him.”
I stared.
“No.”
“I knew something was wrong.”
“You knew he disliked you.”
“I knew he watched you.”
“You didn’t know this.”
He looked away.
Then:
“I let you go because you asked.”
“That was the right thing.”
He looked at me.
“Do you still think normal was safer?”
I thought about Jason.
Then about Adrian’s world.
“Normal was never the problem.”
“What was?”
“I confused ordinary appearance with good character.”
He nodded.
No grand confession.
No kiss.
Not yet.
Then Detective Bennett called.
Jason’s notebook had another section.
Not about wives.
Adrian.
A plan written two years earlier.
If Claire ever leaves, make Vale look responsible.
That explained why Jason had been collecting Adrian material.
