Chapter 15 - The Letter Rachel Tried to Send

The envelope was yellow at the edges.

My name had been typed.

CLAIRE BENNETT.

Inside:

Six pages.

Rachel’s handwriting.

The first line:

You don’t know me well enough to trust me, so do not trust this letter automatically.

I stopped.

Evidence first.

Even Rachel understood.

Then:

My husband Jason Mercer noticed you at the Vale Harbor gala.

He asked about you afterward.

I thought it was jealousy because Adrian Vale clearly cared about you.

Then:

Later I found a background report.

Your name.

Your work.

Your aunt.

Your medical fundraiser.

Your connection to Adrian.

My stomach turned.

Rachel had seen the report years before Samuel Price said Jason commissioned one.

Different investigator?

The report she found was older.

Date:

One month after the gala.

Jason ordered background information while still married to Rachel.

So there were two investigations.

The first while Rachel was alive.

The second before Jason approached me.

Then:

I asked Jason why he was investigating a woman he had met once.

He told me Adrian Vale had embarrassed someone in his business circle and he wanted to know what mattered to Vale.

I stared.

I was leverage.

At least initially.

Then Rachel:

I told him you were a person, not a weakness.

He laughed.

Then another paragraph.

What scares me now is not that Jason is interested in you.

It is what he noticed.

Your illness.

Your medical bills.

How often Adrian checks whether you need help.

Jason said something I cannot forget.

A woman who already needs help is easier to understand.

My hands shook.

Then:

He said people like Adrian make sick women believe rescue is love.

I asked what he thought love was.

Jason said:

Making someone understand who they actually depend on.

There.

Years before our marriage.

Dependency.

Then Rachel wrote:

If I leave Jason, I am warning you.

If something happens to me, I am warning you louder.

Mara began crying when I showed her.

Rachel had tried.

The letter never reached me because Martin Cross delivered it to an old attorney who arranged secure placement when I was traveling.

Then the bank branch closed.

Boxes transferred.

Notification went to an old address.

The envelope stayed untouched.

No conspiracy.

Administrative failure.

A warning buried in ordinary paperwork.

Then final page.

Rachel had copied a list from Jason’s first background report.

Three women.

Laura Hale.

Claire Bennett.

Another name.

Monica Kane.

That matched women already known.

Then a fourth:

ELISE WARREN.

Unknown.

Beside each name:

Support network.

Medical dependency.

Financial independence.

Connection value.

Laura:

Personal.

Monica:

Personal.

Claire:

VALE.

Elise:

MERCER.

I stared.

“What does Mercer mean?”

No one knew.

Then Rachel wrote:

I do not know who Elise Warren is.

Jason became furious when I asked.

He took the page.

I copied it first.

Then:

I think one of these women came before Laura.

Laura believed she was his first serious relationship.

Maybe she was wrong too.

We searched carefully.

Elise Warren.

No obvious marriage.

No public relationship with Jason.

Then Mara noticed the surname.

Warren.

Celeste Warren.

The marriage coach who created the original Seventy Four Day Reset.

Elise Warren was Celeste’s daughter.

My chest tightened.

Celeste had never mentioned a daughter in connection with Jason.

Detective Bennett contacted her.

The retired counselor went silent when she heard the name.

“Celeste?”

She whispered:

“Where did you get that?”

“A letter Rachel Mercer wrote.”

Long silence.

Then:

“Elise died twenty two years ago.”

Jason would have been twelve.

Too young for a romantic relationship.

So why was she in his later background file?

“What happened to her?”

Celeste refused to answer without counsel.

Fair.

Then she said one thing.

“Elise was the reason I created the seventy four day program.”

Everything stopped.

“What does that mean?”

“I will speak to investigators.”

Then she ended the call.

No dramatic confession.

No instant connection.

Just another door.

Hours later, Detective Bennett obtained basic public records.

Elise Warren died at twenty nine.

Cause:

Medical complications.

Chronic autoimmune disease.

My skin went cold.

Twenty two years ago.

Before Laura.

Before Rachel.

Before me.

How did Elise connect to Mercer family?

Old newspaper archives.

A charity photograph.

Elise Warren standing beside Robert Mercer.

Jason’s father.

Evelyn Mercer.

And a twelve year old Jason.

Caption:

Mercer Foundation supports Warren Family Adaptive Care Initiative.

So Elise was not Jason’s girlfriend.

She was someone his family knew.

Someone chronically ill.

Someone connected to the original program.

Then another archive.

Three months before Elise died:

Mercer Foundation withdrew funding from the Warren program after a dispute.

No explanation.

Celeste later created the Seventy Four Day Reset.

Maybe Elise’s death shaped her philosophy.

Maybe Robert learned something from it.

Maybe Jason grew up hearing the story.

Evidence not enough.

Then the final discovery.

Mercer Family Holdings archive contained an old folder.

ELISE WARREN.

Not Jason’s.

Robert Mercer’s.

Access history showed the file was opened digitally six months before Jason announced my Europe trip.

User:

JASON MERCER.

He had gone back to a twenty two year old family file before designing my seventy four day isolation.

Why?

Inside the folder was one scanned medical support schedule.

Medication deliveries.

Home care visits.

Emergency contacts.

Then a handwritten memo from Robert Mercer.

Do not cancel visits under any circumstances. Elise’s condition is not something to test.

My mouth went dry.

Someone had once considered canceling her support.

Who?

The next page was missing.

Digitally deleted.

But system logs showed Jason downloaded it before deletion.

Filename:

WARREN INCIDENT REPORT.

He had a copy somewhere.

Police searched his known devices.

Nothing.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

My attorney answered first.

A woman asked for me.

Older voice.

Weak.

“Claire Mercer?”

“Yes.”

“My name is Nora Warren.”

Celeste’s younger sister.

“What do you want?”

Silence.

Then:

“I heard you found Elise’s name.”

I looked at Mara.

Adrian stood by the window but said nothing.

“What happened to Elise?”

Nora’s breathing trembled.

“Before she died, Robert Mercer tried to stop someone from doing to her what Jason later did to Rachel.”

My entire body went cold.

“Who?”

“I cannot tell you over the phone.”

“Why?”

“Because Jason did not invent the experiment.”

The word hit harder than anything else.

Experiment.

Then:

“Who did?”

Nora whispered:

“Ask Evelyn why Robert kept Elise’s incident report out of the family archive.”

The line disconnected.

Seconds later, Detective Bennett received an email from Mercer Family Holdings legal counsel.

They had found a previously sealed records box during a court ordered preservation review.

Label:

WARREN INCIDENT.

ROBERT MERCER PRIVATE.

Inside:

One envelope.

One pharmacy log.

One photograph.

And a handwritten statement signed by Evelyn Mercer.

Date:

Twenty two years earlier.

The first line was visible through the evidence sleeve.

I KNOW WHY ELISE’S MEDICATION STOPPED ARRIVING.

Evelyn had already sworn she knew nothing about the origin of Jason’s seventy four day obsession beyond Celeste’s counseling program.

Now a twenty two year old statement placed her at the center of the event that came before Laura.

Before Rachel.

Before me.

Adrian looked at my face.

Mara stopped breathing.

Detective Bennett did not open the envelope in front of us.

Not yet.

Chain of custody mattered.

Authentication mattered.

Context mattered.

For the first time since Jason sealed me inside my house, I understood that learning why he did it might require going back to something that happened when he was still a child.

And whatever Evelyn Mercer had written about Elise Warren all those years ago was frightening enough that someone had removed the next page, hidden the incident report, and allowed an entire family to pretend the seventy four day test began as nothing more than marriage counseling.

Continue to the next part: Evelyn Mercer’s sealed statement may reveal what happened to Elise Warren decades before Jason’s first marriage, but the missing page could determine whether Jason inherited a family pattern or deliberately recreated a warning everyone else tried to bury.
