Chapter 16 - Daniel Writes

The first letter came three years into Daniel’s sentence.

I had blocked prison mail through attorney.

Sarah asked:

“Do you want?”

“No.”

She stored.

Second year later.

“No.”

Third:

“Maybe.”

Why?

Curiosity.

The letter began:

Elena,

I have spent years writing versions where I explain myself.

Bad sign.

Then:

None change that I sprayed you because I wanted you afraid.

I stopped.

There.

Not accident.

He continued:

I did not think it would damage your eyes the way it did. I knew it was cleaner. I knew it would hurt. I wanted to humiliate you in front of my mother because I felt you had humiliated her.

Then:

That is not a defense.

Good.

Then money.

DMC.

“I believed I earned more than board would give me.”

Then:

I treated the family company like inheritance already mine.

Then:

When Hartwell tightened, I blamed you because blaming you meant I did not have to admit we were already in default.

He had learned.

Then:

I am sorry.

No request to reconcile.

No request response.

Then:

I will not write again unless you ask.

He did not.

I never replied.

Did I forgive?

I stopped asking.

His apology did not change eye.

But it removed one irritation: the lie of accident.

Then Sarah asked:

“Keep?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because truth belongs in file.”

Maybe.

Then Daniel’s release date approached years later.

He would be in his mid forties.

No-contact criminal conditions during supervised release.

He could live elsewhere.

His mother in Charlotte.

Would I fear?

I did.

Safety planning.

Not panic.

Address privacy where possible.

Home cameras.

Work security informed.

No weapon fantasies.

Daniel’s attorney notified he intended move to Atlanta after release for job with an acquaintance, not North Carolina.

Good.

He complied.

No contact.

Supervision.

Restitution.

He worked in commercial property operations, barred by employer from financial authority initially due conviction.

People deserve work after prison.

I could hold that without inviting him into life.

Then Vivian.

She moved to Florida after release.

Sold mansion.

Why?

Legal costs, restructuring equity, shame, too large.

The mansion where attack happened sold to unrelated family.

No museum.

No punishment.

I was glad.

One day listing popped online.

Marble foyer.

Same rug replaced.

I closed browser.

May you like

That house belonged to strangers now.

Good.
