Chapter 8 - Loretta’s Recorder
The recording was seventeen minutes.
At first, nothing happened.
Mom listed:
Milk.
Coffee.
Lucas’s stupid cereal.
Then a knock.
Her footsteps.

Gavin’s voice.
“Loretta.”
I grabbed Lucas’s hand.
Miriam paused.

Mom:

Gavin:

Mom:

Then a chair.
Mom sounded tired.
Gavin:
“The investors are committed.”
Mom:
“To you. Not me.”
Gavin:
“You’re sitting on land you don’t use.”
Mom:
“It’s mine to sit on.”
I smiled through tears.
That was Mom.
Then Gavin’s tone hardened.
“Sam and I need this.”
Mom:
“Samantha doesn’t know what you’re doing.”
Silence.
Gavin:
“She knows enough.”
Mom:
“She knows nothing because you don’t let her know anything.”
My throat tightened.
Then:
“I spoke to Martha.”
Gavin:
“That was unnecessary.”
Mom:
“She found a title search ordered by your company.”
Gavin:
“Public record.”
Mom:
“You don’t have a company.”
Gavin:
“Harriet does.”
Then:
“Same difference.”
Mom:
“No.”
Long silence.
Then Mom:
“I am meeting Martha Thursday morning.”
Gavin:
“I know.”
There.
He knew.
Mom:
“If you’ve filed anything, she’ll find it.”
Gavin:
“Nothing is filed.”
True at that moment.
Then:
“You’re making this uglier than it needs to be.”
Mom:
“You brought papers to my house asking me to sign away land for two hundred thousand dollars.”

Gavin:
“That’s cash.”
Mom:
“It’s theft with a check attached.”
Then he said something that made Lucas curse.
“Samantha would sign.”
Mom:
“She would not.”
“She signs what I put in front of her every month.”
Silence.
I felt shame.

Then Mom:
“If you ever put your hands on my daughter again, I will make sure Lucas knows everything.”
My heart stopped.

Mom breathing.

That was all.
We sat silent.
Lucas looked at me.
“Why didn’t you tell us?”
“I didn’t think it was bad enough.”
His eyes filled.
“Sam.”
“I know.”
Miriam stopped him with a look.
No guilt.
Then recording proved:

Lucas found in Mom’s house.
Voice identifiable.
Gavin could challenge.

Then protective order hearing.
Gavin’s attorney attacked.

Dana said it also showed Loretta warning about him putting hands on me.
Gavin claimed “again” referred to playful roughness.
I almost laughed.

No reports.
No photos.

Court extended protection temporarily through proceedings.
Then Gavin violated indirectly.
He sent flowers through a friend.

Then Harriet.
She gave police a statement.
Claimed deed was Loretta’s idea.
Why?
Loretta wanted to “help Samantha’s marriage.”

“Gavin pressured Loretta more than I knew.”

That sentence made me physically sick.
I had a full time salary.
But because Gavin controlled joint money, his mother described me as dependent.
