Chapter 11 - The Notary Seal

Denise Warren was furious.

Not frightened.

Not ashamed.

Furious.

“They used my seal.”

We met in Miriam’s office with investigators.

Denise brought her notary journals.

Harriet’s power of attorney notarization from eleven months earlier.

Date.

Signature.

ID information.

A clean seal impression.

The exact source.

Then emails.

Denise had sent Harriet a PDF because Harriet needed copy for bank.

File metadata showed Harriet downloaded.

Then forwarded to Gavin:

Keep this for Mom paperwork.

That alone normal.

Then copy shop surveillance.

Harriet at counter.

Gavin beside her.

He placed a thumb drive.

Asked employee to scan several documents at high resolution.

Employee did.

Receipt.

No knowledge.

Then a week later Gavin emailed himself:

DENISE SEAL CLEAN.PNG

Image file.

Cropped.

Transparent background.

Hard to explain innocently.

Then:

LORETTA SIGNATURE.PNG.

Same.

Then deed template.

Layered.

Investigators had technical evidence.

Gavin’s attorney argued:

He was preparing a draft to show Loretta.

Why create notary seal?

“Demonstration.”

Why print and rescan after her death?

No good answer.

Then Harriet’s laptop.

Search terms:

Can deed be recorded after grantor dies if signed before death.

That could be innocent if she believed signed.

Then:

What happens if original deed lost.

Then:

Does notary have to remember signer.

Worse.

Then:

Forgery statute property deed Georgia.

Very bad.

Search date Monday.

Before Loretta died.

They knew legal risk before filing.

Then Harriet’s messages to Gavin:

The seal looks too clean.

Gavin:

Rescan whole page.

Harriet:

Good.

There.

Direct.

I sat still while investigator read.

No rage left.

Just certainty.

Then prosecutor filed charges.

Broadly:

Forgery related offenses.

Attempted theft by deception concerning property.

Conspiracy.

For Gavin additionally:

Domestic assault and unlawful restraint related to locking me beneath stairs.

For Harriet:

Participation in restraint and assault related to shove.

Exact counts would be litigated.

They were arrested through arranged surrender, not SWAT raid.

Gavin appeared in court in clothes I once bought him.

Harriet looked smaller without living room authority.

Bail conditions included no contact with me, Lucas, or relevant witnesses.

No transfer of property.

No access to Macon Ridge assets beyond counsel approved matters.

Then Gavin looked at me during hearing.

Not long.

I looked away.

He no longer got to use my face to decide whether he was winning.

Then outside, reporters?

Local case maybe some interest because industrial corridor fraud, but not national. Fine.

We avoided media.

Then Harriet’s attorney approached prosecutor about cooperation.

She was willing to say Gavin created deed.

Of course.

Gavin’s lawyer said Harriet initiated plan.

Of course.

Their alliance lasted exactly until consequences became real.

Then evidence decided roles.

Harriet formed LLC.

Harriet supplied seal.

Gavin created deed file.

Harriet pressured.

Gavin filed.

Both.

Then one email showed origin.

Harriet:

If Loretta won’t sell, why not have Sam inherit and make her sign?

Gavin:

Too slow. Lucas will interfere.

Harriet:

Then do it before probate.

That was first moment fraud direction appeared.

Gavin:

How?

Harriet:

Figure it out.

Later Gavin sent draft deed.

So Harriet suggested bypassing probate.

Gavin engineered method.

Then why lock me?

Harriet’s text:

Inheritance isn’t going anywhere.

She wanted me contained.

Gavin executed physically.

No one could hide behind the other.

Then Lucas asked:

“Do you feel better?”

“No.”

“Me either.”

Justice did not feel like movie climax.

Mom was still dead.

Marriage gone.

Land clouded though now returned.

Money spent on lawyers.

Then probate.

Loretta’s will accepted preliminarily after standard process.

No contest from Gavin because he lacked standing directly.

Could he claim through marriage? Inheritance separate, but divorce case would address.

Then he filed divorce counterclaim.

Accused me of abandonment and cruelty for breaking storage door with sledgehammer.

Dana laughed only after hanging up.

“Let him explain why the door was locked.”

Then domestic case evidence included damaged door.

Gavin’s photos.

He had photographed.

He claimed fear.

But timestamps:

After I left.

No injuries.

His own text to friend:

Sam broke out.

Friend:

Broke out of what?

Gavin did not answer.

Then friend later asked:

Did you lock her in?

Gavin:

For ten minutes. She was insane.

Admission.

Another piece.

Then Harriet did something unexpected.

She sent an apology through counsel.

One sentence:

I should never have helped Gavin stop you from reaching your mother.

Not enough.

But first acknowledgment.

May you like

I did not answer.

Continue to the next part: With both Gavin and Harriet formally charged, their partnership collapses as each tries to blame the other, while Samantha begins the separate fight to end her marriage and recover the money Gavin controlled.
