Chapter 8 - The Nurse Who Had Two Badges

Nurse Megan surrendered her badge immediately.

She had never visited Maine.

Hospital records showed her credential used twice outside Riverside.

Once at Blake Private Medical Center.

Once on the rehabilitation island.

The card inside her wallet was genuine.

A second card existed.

Apex produced duplicate badges during the hospital installation and never destroyed every test copy.

Peter’s network could impersonate medical staff from multiple hospitals.

The woman on the boat wore Megan’s face on her identification.

Security video revealed a different body type.

The disguise depended on nobody looking closely.

That was how the entire system worked.

A polished husband.

A concerned father.

A qualified doctor.

A legitimate transfer.

Every lie survived because the surface looked familiar.

The boat reached Canadian waters before interception.

Authorities found it abandoned near a fishing harbor.

Blood marked one seat.

The older passenger had been moved into a van.

The female accomplice remained unidentified.

A camera captured only her profile.

Laura recognized her.

Catherine Blake.

Ethan’s mother.

Peter told everyone Catherine died from cancer twelve years earlier.

Laura had never seen a body.

Another Blake death may have been manufactured.

If Catherine lived, she could know where Peter held Daniel and why Laura was hidden.

Ethan appeared genuinely shocked during questioning.

“My mother is dead.”

“You knew Daniel’s death was false,” Nolan said.

“My father showed me the body after Mom died.”

“Whose body?”

Ethan had no answer.

The network did not only remove enemies.

It erased inconvenient family members and replaced certainty with documents.

Catherine had managed Blake Medical Center’s early finances.

She may have discovered the Northbridge transfers.

Peter could have confined her just as he confined Daniel and Laura.

Or she could have helped him.

The boat video did not show coercion.

Hale’s financial review uncovered payments from Catherine Blake’s identity continuing through the present.

She authorized medical transfers, psychiatric reports, and the false order moving me from Riverside.

The user who entered Liam’s credentials may have been Catherine.

The hospital attack reached deeper than Ethan.

My encrypted vault recorded another message.

Not an access attempt.

A file had been deposited inside using Daniel’s original certificate.

Video.

An older man sat beneath a low ceiling.

His left hand trembled.

A scar crossed his temple.

I knew his eyes.

My father.

“Emma,” he said slowly. “Do not open Northbridge for Hale.”

Attorney Hale stopped breathing beside my bed.

The video continued.

“Samuel Hale signed the first transfer Peter used to take Apex.”

Hale moved closer to the screen.

“That is not true.”

Daniel looked toward someone outside the frame.

Then back.

“If Liam has the token, keep it away from the court. The court is where they need it.”

The file ended.

Metadata showed the video was recorded two hours earlier.

Daniel was alive.

His warning accused the attorney who had protected the trust for years.

Hale requested immediate suspension from his role until investigators reviewed the claim.

He did not defend himself with outrage.

He handed over every device, archive, and financial record.

The first transfer Daniel mentioned dated nine years earlier.

Hale’s signature appeared beneath it.

The document moved temporary Apex authority to Peter after Daniel’s medical emergency.

Hale remembered signing an emergency operations agreement.

He believed it preserved payroll while Daniel recovered.

The page he signed contained no permanent transfer.

The current document included additional clauses.

Printer analysis showed the signature page came from a different packet.

Hale’s real signature had been attached to a false agreement.

The same method Ethan later used against me.

Daniel may not know Hale’s signature was stolen.

Or the warning may have been forced.

His eyes moved repeatedly toward the same offscreen point.

Someone coached him.

Liam noticed a second pattern.

Daniel tapped his right index finger against his knee.

Three taps.

Pause.

One tap.

Pause.

Four taps.

A childhood code.

Liam translated it.

LIE.

Daniel was telling us the spoken warning was false.

The true message was hidden in his movement.

The court token might be safe.

The person behind the camera was not.

Another sequence followed near the end.

Six.

One.

Twelve.

Twelve.

FALL.

“Fall?” I whispered.

The last thing Ethan said before I hit the kitchen floor.

You never learned when to keep your mouth shut.

The lie he told the hospital.

She fell.

Daniel was pointing toward the false fall story.

Someone in the room had used the same method before.

Catherine Blake’s financial archive contained one incident report from twelve years earlier.

Catherine slipped in the shower.

Severe head injury.

Transferred to private care.

Declared dead three weeks later.

Peter had used the same story on his wife.

Continue to the next part: Daniel’s hidden code suggests Catherine Blake survived the same kind of staged accident Ethan used against Emma.
