Chapter 7 - The Lock Liam Never Opened
Liam denied hiding anything intentionally.
Then Hale asked about our mother’s estate.
After Daniel’s reported death, our mother, Catherine Carter, gave Liam a sealed medical case.
She said it contained family emergency records and asked him never to open it unless both parents were gone and one child was in immediate danger.
Catherine died five years later.
Liam stored the case inside his private office safe at Riverside.
He forgot it existed until Rebecca repeated Daniel’s message.
The case had no visible lock.
Its metal surface opened through a medical identification code.
Inside were two objects.
A small hardware token.
A handwritten letter from our mother.
Liam and I read it together.
Emma and Liam,
Daniel discovered that Peter Blake was using private medical guardianships to remove people from company decisions. He created Northbridge to transfer control away from families and toward employees. Peter learned the system existed. If Daniel disappears, the token must not enter any Blake controlled network.
The token was the final Northbridge signing key.
Without it, no one could activate the cooperative board, release the employee units, or authenticate Daniel’s original records.
Ethan had been searching for a password because he believed the key was digital.
It was physical.
It had remained inside Liam’s hospital office while Ethan’s company installed security around it.
Our mother continued.
Liam, you will want to protect Emma by choosing for her. Do not. Emma, you will want to prove danger beyond doubt. Do not risk your life to make cruel people admit what they are.
We sat in silence.
Our parents had understood both of us too well.
The letter ended with one instruction.
Do not activate Northbridge until Daniel’s status is known. If he is alive but unable to consent, protect the employees and wait.
The token did not belong to me personally.
It belonged to a structure my father created for thousands of people.
Using it immediately might expose assets.
It might also trigger transfers Peter or Ethan had prepared to intercept.
Hale placed the token inside court custody.
I agreed.
Liam agreed.
No family member would hold it alone.
Ethan learned about the case through his attorney.
His reaction confirmed its importance.
He withdrew his cooperation offer and demanded federal protection.
He claimed Peter would kill him if Northbridge activated.
Detective Nolan asked why.
“Because Dad never owned Apex.”
“You are listed as founder.”
“Daniel created the first company. Dad moved it into my name after the poisoning.”
“What poisoning?”
Ethan stopped.
He had said too much.
After several hours with his attorney, he admitted Peter poisoned Daniel during the investment conference nine years earlier.
The dose did not kill him.
Peter moved him into Blake Medical Center and created the death record.
Ethan was twenty six.
He knew Daniel survived.
He helped transfer the first Carter accounts.
“Did Emma know?”
“No.”
“Did you marry her because of Northbridge?”
“At first.”
The words reached me through the recorded interview.
“At first” did not soften them.
Ethan said he later loved me.
He described love as though feeling something privately erased what he chose publicly.
“Why beat her?” Nolan asked.
“She was going to destroy everything.”
“Everything meaning the company?”
“My life.”
He still understood no difference.
The company, reputation, money, and control formed one object in his mind.
I existed only where I supported it.
Ethan claimed Peter kept Daniel alive because the original biometric key required periodic confirmation.
Every six months, a blood sample and live neural response preserved Northbridge’s dormant status.
If Daniel died without activating the cooperative, the trust would move to me.
If I died or became incapacitated while married, Ethan could petition for spousal management.
Peter needed one Carter alive but controlled.
For years, Daniel served that role.
Now I did.
The last blood sample from Room 614 meant another confirmation deadline approached.
Peter had to present Daniel again within twelve days or Northbridge would trigger automatic beneficiary review.
That created a clock.
Police searched every Blake medical transport route.
Horizon employees provided invoices.
A private aircraft left the state under a medical exemption.
Passenger: David Cole.
Destination: Maine.
Liam remembered a Blake affiliated rehabilitation island near the Canadian border.
The facility treated executives requiring absolute privacy.
Federal agents obtained a warrant.
Before they arrived, the island lost power.
A fire began inside the records building.
One boat left the northern dock.
Thermal cameras showed three people aboard.
One older man.
One woman.
One person wearing a Riverside emergency jacket.
The jacket belonged to Nurse Megan Cole.
She was standing outside my room when security checked.
