Chapter 3 - The Report Written before the Beating

Dr. Peter Blake filed an emergency psychiatric petition before noon.
He claimed I suffered persecutory delusions concerning Apex Development and believed ordinary business transactions were criminal.
He asked the court to transfer me to Blake Private Medical Center for stabilization.
Attached was a report from psychiatrist Dr. Vivian Cross.
The report described me as paranoid, secretive, and obsessed with hidden financial networks.
Dr. Cross claimed she examined me three weeks earlier.
I had never met her.
The report included private details.
My father’s trust.
My disagreement with Ethan.
The external audit.
My emergency arrangement with Liam.
Someone had been reading my encrypted notes before the assault.
The petition also described a future incident.
Emma may injure herself during a domestic confrontation and falsely accuse her spouse.
The sentence had been written eleven days before Ethan beat me.
They had prepared the explanation first.
Attorney Samuel Hale arrived at the hospital with a court order blocking the transfer.
He was sixty eight, with quiet eyes and the habit of placing every document exactly parallel to the table edge.
He had represented my father before his death.
After reading Dr. Cross’s report, he removed his glasses.
“They are trying to convert evidence into symptoms.”
“Can they?”
“Not easily now.”
“Why now?”
“Because Ethan believes the audit vault contains something beyond fraud.”
I had not told Hale everything.
The vault included two sections.
The first held evidence against Ethan.
The second contained documents from my father’s trust that even I had not fully opened.
My father, Daniel Carter, invested in Apex through a holding structure called Carter Strategic Reserve.
He died before the final restructuring.
Hale maintained the sealed founder records until I turned thirty two.
My birthday was three weeks away.
At that point, I would gain direct authority over several dormant corporate accounts.
Ethan knew the birthday mattered.
He did not know why.
“Did Dad own more than the voting shares?” I asked.
Hale hesitated.
“The sealed documents suggest your father funded the original land acquisitions through another company.”
“How much of Apex does that affect?”
“I cannot answer until the seal opens.”
“Why did no one tell me?”
“Daniel instructed me to wait.”
“My father is dead. I am alive.”
Hale accepted the anger.
“You are right.”
Another person had protected me through silence and left me vulnerable to someone who knew more than I did.
Hale requested emergency authority to open the records early.
The court scheduled a hearing for the following morning.
Until then, the trust remained locked.
Ethan remained in police custody on assault charges, but his attorneys requested release.
They presented photographs of scratches on his forearm.
My nails had broken when I tried to pull his hand from my throat.
His attorney called the marks evidence of mutual violence.
Detective Nolan presented the audio.
Ethan demanding the password.
The blows.
His threat.
The judge kept him detained pending a full safety hearing.
No conviction existed.
Temporary restraint did.
Dr. Cross attempted to leave the state.
Police stopped her at the airport.
Her laptop contained evaluation templates for wealthy families.
Unstable spouse.
Impaired shareholder.
Delusional employee.
Emotional heir.
Each report transferred authority to the person paying her.
Peter Blake’s medical foundation had paid her four hundred thousand dollars during the previous year.
Some payments came from public mental health grants.
Money intended to help vulnerable patients funded false reports against one.
Dr. Cross denied knowing about the assault.
Messages showed Peter sent her photographs of my bruises from earlier incidents.
He described them as injuries I caused during episodes.
She never asked to examine me.
The hospital medical team documented my current mental state.
Alert.
Oriented.
Consistent memory.
No evidence of psychosis.
Fear responses appropriate to recent trauma.
The court suspended Dr. Cross’s report.
Blake Private Medical Center lost authority to receive me.
Liam remained nearby but stopped acting as my primary doctor.
He assigned independent physicians because he knew Ethan’s attorneys would claim family bias.
As chief, he controlled security and resources.
As my brother, he held my hand only when I asked.
That separation protected both of us.
The forensic team examined my torn hospital gown? It was pink hospital gown now. My original clothes remained sealed.
Inside the seam of my blouse, they found a small tracking chip.
It had been sewn beneath the label.
The chip transmitted to an account owned by Apex Security Systems.
Ethan had tracked my movements for months.
The account history showed every visit to Hale’s office.
Every trip to the bank.
Every evening I met Liam.
He knew I was preparing to leave.
He also knew the date of the sealed trust hearing.
The beating occurred the night before Hale planned to request early release of the records.
The assault was not only punishment.
It was an attempt to stop the hearing.
My phone showed another access attempt.
This time, the user did not guess passwords.
They entered a valid emergency recovery code.
Only three people possessed codes.
Me.
Hale.
May you like
And my late father.
Continue to the next part: Someone uses Daniel Carter’s old trust identity to enter Emma’s encrypted vault.
