Chapter 5 - The Woman at the Elevator

Laura Blake did not resist security.

She placed both hands against the wall and asked only whether I was alive.

Detective Nolan interviewed her inside a secured conference room.

Liam watched through the observation window.

I joined by video from my bed.

Laura was thirty four, with pale hair and a small scar near her mouth.

She looked enough like Ethan around the eyes that no one needed a family photograph.

“Why did Ethan say he was an only child?” I asked.

“Because our father told everyone I died.”

The official record showed Laura died at age fourteen in a boating accident.

No body had been recovered.

Peter and Catherine Blake held a private memorial.

Two years later, Peter used the settlement from her life insurance to invest in medical facilities.

Laura said the accident never happened.

At fourteen, she discovered financial records inside Peter’s office connecting Blake Private Medical Center to illegal patient billing.

She threatened to tell Catherine.

Peter declared her unstable and placed her in a private adolescent facility under another name.

Catherine was told Laura ran away and died near the lake.

The facility changed names three times.

Laura remained under guardianship until she was twenty six.

When she escaped, Peter threatened to return her through a court order.

She lived quietly, gathering evidence.

“How did you get my father’s card?”

“Daniel gave it to me.”

My throat tightened.

“When?”

“Eight years ago.”

One year after he supposedly died.

Hale stood from his chair.

“That is impossible.”

Laura looked toward him.

“Your client did not die when you think he did.”

Daniel Carter’s death certificate said he suffered a heart attack inside a hotel during an investment conference.

The body was cremated at his written request.

Hale identified him through hospital records and personal effects.

He never viewed the body.

Neither did I.

Liam had been completing his residency in another state.

We believed the closed casket honored our father’s wishes.

Laura said Daniel survived an attempted poisoning.

A private emergency team moved him to Blake Medical Center.

Peter treated him under the name David Cole.

Daniel recovered enough to realize Peter and Ethan were using Carter trust accounts.

He asked Laura for help after seeing her inside the facility.

She carried messages outside.

“He said he was going home,” Laura said. “Then he disappeared.”

“When?”

“Eight years ago.”

The access card had remained hidden with her.

She waited because Daniel warned that Peter controlled judges, physicians, and financial officers.

After seeing the news report about my hospitalization, she came directly to Riverside.

“Why now?”

“Because Ethan used the same fall story Peter used on me.”

Laura’s claim required proof.

Her fingerprints matched childhood records preserved after the supposed boating accident.

DNA confirmed she was Peter Blake’s daughter and Ethan’s sister.

The card matched Carter Reserve archives.

Its internal chip contained Daniel’s private signing certificate.

The certificate had never been used after his recorded death.

That meant the synthetic transfers inside Apex came from copied credentials, not the original key.

Laura also carried a handwritten note.

Emma,

If this reaches you, Peter knows the trust is larger than Apex. Do not let Ethan open the Northbridge file.

My father’s handwriting appeared genuine.

The ink and paper required testing.

I had never heard of Northbridge.

Hale had.

Northbridge Cooperative Holdings was a dormant company created by Daniel before the Apex restructuring.

Public records showed no assets.

The sealed trust folder contained one unopened section marked NORTHBRIDGE.

Hale had postponed it because the court authorized only Apex related files.

The warning suggested the hidden corporate power extended beyond the construction company.

Detective Nolan asked Laura whether Daniel named anyone else.

“He said Liam would recognize the medical code if Peter ever tried to move Emma.”

Liam entered the room.

“What code?”

Laura repeated three numbers.

Liam stopped.

Room 614 was not part of Riverside’s public floor plan.

It was an unused isolation suite inside the old emergency wing, sealed after renovations.

Apex installed the electronic locks.

The false transfer order had originally assigned me to Blake Private Medical Center.

The backup destination embedded in the system was Riverside Room 614.

Someone planned to keep me inside my brother’s own hospital if the external transfer failed.

Dana opened the sealed wing with police.

Room 614 contained a hospital bed, restraints, recording equipment, and clothes in my size.

My prenatal? No pregnancy here. Keep accurate. There were medications under my name, including sedatives.

A camera faced the bed.

The live feed connected to Peter Blake’s clinic.

The room had been prepared before I arrived.

One drawer contained transfer documents surrendering my Apex shares.

Another contained a statement claiming Liam’s emotional involvement made his testimony unreliable.

Peter had planned to turn Riverside against its own chief.

Inside the bedside cabinet, investigators found a blood sample labeled Daniel Carter.
