Chapter 9 - The Birth Plan
I remembered filling out the original form.
Dr. Morris asked:
“Who do you want with you during labor?”
I said:
“Brian and Sarah.”
At the time, I still believed Brian could be good during important moments.
Sarah had been my safest person since childhood.
Then three weeks before the assault, the birth plan changed.
Brian only.
No family visitors.
No photographs without spouse approval.
Patient requests reduced external stimulation due anxiety.
I wrote none of that.
Portal access came from home.
Then a note:
Patient prefers spouse to assist with medical decisions if distressed.
Again.
Not me.
Dr. Morris had printed the plan because something felt wrong.
She showed me the version.
My eyes stopped on one line.
If emergency psychiatric consultation is required, spouse requests notification before extended family.
Brian was preparing for the possibility that somebody at the hospital noticed my fear.
He wanted to be the gatekeeper.
Then hospital labor and delivery security reviewed my chart.
A visitor alert had already been added.

Sarah Bennett.
Restriction:
Do not permit without patient verbal confirmation.
Requestor:
Patient portal.
Sarah stared.
“He was going to keep me out.”
“Yes.”
Then my mother Melanie had no restriction.
Why?
Because Brian believed he could manipulate her.
Text messages proved it.
Brian to Melanie:
Sarah keeps encouraging Claire to run when she’s emotional.
Melanie:
I’ll talk to Claire.
Brian:
Please do not mention Sarah. She’ll get defensive.
He controlled what we said to one another.
Then Sarah gave investigators every message Brian ever sent her.
Most ordinary.
Some supportive.
Some designed.
One month before I planned to leave:
Brian:
Claire has been crying a lot. If she says something extreme, tell me before acting.
Sarah:
What do you mean extreme?
Brian:
Leaving. Taking the baby somewhere unsafe. Hurting herself.
Sarah:
She has never said she’d hurt herself.
Brian:
Just watch.
He planted a category.
Then three days before my escape:
Sarah:
Claire asked if she could stay with me after the baby comes.
Brian:
She’s angry at me. Don’t feed it.
Sarah:
Maybe talk to her.
Brian:
I am.
He was not.
Then one message Sarah had forgotten.
Two months earlier:
Brian:
If I ever ask whether Claire bought a ticket, I need you to tell me the truth.
Sarah:
Why would she buy a ticket?
Brian:
Exactly.
He had rehearsed the question before the ticket existed.
That chilled her.
Then Mark Dorsey explained why.
Brian told him months earlier:
If Claire leaves, she’ll use a bus because she hates flying pregnant.
He knew my habits.
He planned around them.
Then the custody draft.
Patricia’s old family law templates had become a folder on Brian’s laptop titled:
AFTER BIRTH.
Documents:
Emergency parenting petition.
Financial affidavit.
Mental health chronology.
Witness list.
Sarah.
Melanie.
Dr. Morris.
Kendra.
Marian.
He had assembled people into roles.
Some had never agreed.
Then witness summary for Sarah:
Sister confirms Claire made impulsive interstate travel plans during pregnancy.
Technically Sarah could say that.
But the context was abuse.
Brian planned to remove context.
Then for Melanie:
Mother confirms Claire displayed emotional volatility and resisted medical advice.
Melanie believed fake screenshots.
Then Kendra:
Former clinic employee confirms repeated concern.
She had been paid.
Then Marian:
Maternal wellness professional confirms attempted placement.
All of it could look powerful if separated from how it was created.
That was the strategy.
Not invent one enormous lie.
Build many partial truths around hidden manipulation.
Then Sarah asked:
“Was he planning this before he hurt you?”
“Yes.”
The assault was not the plan.
The assault was what happened when the plan failed.
Then investigators found one draft labeled:
IF CLAIRE CALLS POLICE.
I stopped breathing.
It was a script.
Brian had written:
Remain calm.
Do not argue.
Mention pregnancy anxiety.
Point to portal screenings.
Mention Sarah encouraging interstate departure.
Show Blue Ridge referral.
Do not discuss finances unless attorney present.
I remembered him standing in the hallway.
“She dropped it.”
Calm.
He had rehearsed what to do if police ever came.
Then the final line:
If physical marks visible, state self defense or accident.
He was not improvising after the iron.
