Chapter 11 - The Person Behind P

The first assumption was Patricia.
Impossible.
She had been dead three years.
The second was someone from her old law office.
That proved correct.
Paula Greene.
Fifty nine.
Former paralegal.
Worked beside Patricia for fifteen years.
After Patricia died, Brian contacted her for help organizing old family files.
Paula agreed to speak.
She did not hide.
“I told him to stop.”
Her messages supported that.
Brian first contacted her four months earlier.
He asked for Patricia’s old separation templates.
Paula sent blank forms.
Why?
“He said he and Claire were preparing an amicable separation.”
False.
Then he asked questions.
Can wife relocate before birth?
Can husband freeze joint accounts?
Can a sister interfere with custody?
Can medical instability matter?
Paula answered generally.
Then Brian began sending her edited documents.
Paula noticed metadata looked wrong.
She warned him:
Do not fabricate records.
Get a lawyer.
When he mentioned Claire might leave Friday:
If she leaves, do not chase her.
Do not block door.
Do not take keys.
Do not touch her.
Brian replied:
You don’t understand.
Paula:
I understand exactly.
Her late friend Patricia had told her about Emily Ross.
Paula remembered how Brian reacted after Emily left.
Rage.
Humiliation.
Obsession with being made to look powerless.
She had feared history repeating.
Then why not warn me?
“I did not know where the line was.”
“What line?”
“Whether he was venting or planning.”
That hesitation had consequences.
She now regretted.
Then Paula gave investigators a voicemail from Brian.
Night before assault.
“Sarah is helping her. If Claire gets on that bus, the mortgage dies and Blue Ridge is useless.”
There.
Both deadlines.
Then:
“I just need her home one more day.”
Paula called him back.
Told him:
“Let her leave.”
Brian hung up.
Then Paula called Patricia’s former supervising attorney, hoping someone could advise.
No police.
No call to me.
Too indirect.
Again.
Everyone circled around the person actually in danger.
Then Paula revealed something in Patricia’s old files.
Emily Ross had contacted Patricia after leaving Brian.
One letter.
Emily:
You taught him every legal way to make me feel trapped, then acted surprised when he stopped caring what was legal.
Patricia kept it.
Never showed Brian.
Under it Patricia wrote:
She is right.
That mattered.
Maybe Patricia recognized what she had created.
Then another note:
Brian confuses losing control with being harmed.
If I cannot teach him the difference, he will hurt someone.
She wrote that seven years before me.
Did she get him help?
Records showed therapy for several months.
Brian stopped.
Then I met him years later.
He never told me.
Then Paula said:
“Patricia left instructions that I should give Claire this if Brian ever repeated the pattern.”
A sealed envelope.
My name was not on it.
Future spouse.
Inside:
If my son is using my work to frighten you, I am sorry.
That sentence nearly broke me.
Patricia wrote before she died.
She knew possibility.
Then:
The forms I created were meant to protect clients from chaos. Brian learned to use structure as intimidation. Do not assume legal looking documents are lawful merely because they came from my files.
Then a list of template identification numbers.
That helped investigators distinguish Patricia’s original blanks from Brian’s altered forms.
Then one template number matched the fake marital property waiver in the refinance.
Another matched the “stability plan.”
Another matched Blue Ridge support declaration.
Evidence trail strengthened.
Then Paula said:
“There is one form that isn’t Patricia’s.”
Which?
The prenatal record transfer.
Different footer.
Different formatting.
Created by:
Kendra Hale.
Kendra had gone beyond helping Brian fill his mother’s templates.
She built her own medical release.
Why?
Payment.
But maybe more.
Then forensic accounting showed Brian paid Kendra another thirty thousand dollars through an LLC no one had seen.
Total payments to her now exceeded fifty thousand.
Sarah stared.
“That isn’t favors.”
No.
Then Kendra’s attorney requested another interview.
Her story changed.
Brian had promised her something more than money.
A partnership.
In a new maternal support business he planned to create after the baby was born.
Name:
MERCER FAMILY WELLNESS.
Brian intended to invest part of the refinance proceeds.
Kendra would manage insurance.
Marian would consult.
And Blue Ridge referrals could become a pipeline.

My supposed treatment plan was also becoming a business relationship.
Continue to the next part: Brian was preparing a maternal wellness company with Kendra using money from the refinance he needed Claire to sign, making Claire’s fake treatment plan part of a larger financial deal.
