Chapter 8 - The Money Brian Said Did Not Exist

The trust changed everything and nothing.
Brian had money.
Not unlimited money.
Not billionaire money.
But enough that he did not need to take my bank card because groceries were expensive.
Enough that he did not need to hide every dollar.
Enough that his claim:
“We cannot afford for you to leave”
had always been partly false.
The trust held:
Investment funds.
A rental property interest.
Cash reserves.
Current value:
About one point three million.
Restrictions:
Family housing.
Education.
Medical needs.
Certain investments.
Brian could make distributions to himself within limits.
He had used some.
Not much.
Why hide?
Tax planning?
Privacy?
Control.
Then financial records showed he used trust money to fund:
Forty thousand dollars into the townhouse partnership.
Thirty thousand toward our home down payment years earlier.
Twenty thousand for renovations.
He told me those came from savings.
Not criminal.
Just concealed.
Then why take a fraudulent home equity line?
Because he did not want to withdraw more trust principal.
He wanted to preserve inherited wealth while using jointly owned house equity for his failed investment.
That was uglier.
Then the proposed refinance:
Two hundred ten thousand.
He planned to pay off the fraudulent line.
Cover personal debts.
Then reimburse the family trust for some earlier distributions.
My signature would effectively move shared marital equity into restoring his protected inheritance.
I stared at the flow chart.
“He was using our house to make his private trust whole.”
My attorney nodded carefully.
“That appears to be part of the plan.”
That gave Friday another purpose.
Then Patricia’s trust documents included a clause:
Upon birth of Brian’s biological child, a new descendant subtrust receives twenty five percent of certain assets.
Brian wanted the baby born while he still controlled the family structure.
Could I interfere?
Not automatically.
The trust was his family’s.
But if divorce occurred before birth, administration became more complicated.
He was terrified of uncertainty.
Then Blue Ridge.
Then medical narratives.
Then custody plans.
Control at every layer.
Then one trust payment:
Nine thousand dollars.
Recipient:
Kendra Hale.
I froze.
Kendra said Brian paid her from his personal account.
Apparently he paid more.
Total across accounts:
Twenty thousand two hundred dollars.
That changed her role.
She had not been doing small favors.
She had been receiving substantial money.
Then one payment:
Fifteen thousand dollars.
To Marian Cole.
Marian had disclosed only one thousand.
Her attorney immediately requested time.
Later she admitted:
The additional money was a donation to Blue Ridge through a donor advised account.
Brian asked that it support “family stabilization access.”
Still a payment connected to the organization processing my intake.
Potential conflict.
Then another:
Twenty five thousand.
To Family Continuity Consulting.
Mark Dorsey had received eight thousand five hundred.
Where did the rest go?
Refunded.
Dorsey returned unused retainer after terminating Brian.
Good.
Not everyone kept the money.
Then one account shocked Sarah.
Five thousand dollars.
Recipient:
SARAH BENNETT.
She stared.
“I never got this.”
Bank account number did not belong to her.
It belonged to:
SB FAMILY SUPPORT LLC.
A shell.
Created two months earlier.
Organizer:
Brian.
He had built an entity using Sarah’s initials.
Why?
To show Blue Ridge and perhaps future court records that my sister had financially supported the intervention.
The five thousand moved in and out.
No Sarah benefit.
Then another transfer into that shell.
From my mother Melanie.
Two thousand dollars.
She admitted.
Brian told her it was for “prenatal counseling.”
She believed Sarah was coordinating.
Again.
He made relatives appear to support a plan none of them understood.
Then Sarah said:
“He built a whole family around the version he wanted.”
Exactly.
Then my medical portal investigation returned.
Kendra did not make every unauthorized change.
Some were made from our home IP address.
Likely Brian.
One came from a hotel in another city while Brian was at work locally.
Who?
My mother Melanie had been traveling there.
I stared.
Did she access my portal?
She denied.
Then investigators found the hotel WiFi login belonged to someone else:
Marian Cole.
She had traveled for a conference.
Same date.
Marian admitted Brian gave her my portal credentials and asked her to review questionnaires.
She logged in.
Read.
Did not change?
Logs showed she changed one field.
Emergency support preference:
Spouse.
That was her.
Why?
“She told me she preferred him present.”
“You never spoke to me.”
“No.”
Again.
People editing my life because Brian said I wanted it.
Then Dr. Morris found another alteration.
Birth plan.
Original:
Sarah present during labor if available.
Changed:
Brian only.
No additional family.
I stared.
That one was changed three weeks before the assault.
May you like
Brian wanted Sarah removed from the delivery room before I ever bought the bus ticket.
Continue to the next part: Brian had already removed Sarah from Claire’s birth plan weeks before the escape attempt, proving his plan to isolate the sisters began long before he knew Claire was leaving.
