Chapter 14 - The Attorney Who Knew

David Sloan did not look like a mastermind.

Seventy.

Semi retired.

Thirty five years of family law.

He came with counsel anyway.

He confirmed Patricia worked for him.

He confirmed he created standard forms:

Financial affidavits.

Medical releases.

Temporary support agreements.

Emergency custody checklists.

Nothing inherently sinister.

Brian had access to some through Patricia’s estate.

Then:

“Did you know he was using them against Claire?”

“No.”

“Did you know he was asking questions about pregnancy before she became pregnant?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Brian scheduled two consultations over two years.

First:

General marital asset planning.

Second:

Potential separation.

Did David represent Brian?

Limited consultation.

No ongoing representation.

He told Brian:

An adult spouse can leave.

Pregnancy does not give husband authority over residence.

Custody issues begin after birth.

Do not interfere with medical care.

Do not hide money.

Do not fabricate evidence.

Then Brian asked:

“What if she is unstable?”

David answered:

Then actual clinicians and courts evaluate actual evidence.

Not husband curated screenshots.

Good.

Then why did David not warn me?

Attorney confidentiality.

He was Brian’s consulting lawyer.

He could not simply call the spouse.

Fair.

Then Emily’s voicemail.

David received.

He told Brian:

Do not contact Emily again.

Brian denied harassment.

David ended consultation.

Then Brian went elsewhere.

Paula.

Dorsey.

Blue Ridge.

Kendra.

He kept searching until someone gave him pieces he could use.

That pattern mattered more than one adviser.

Then David identified a document in Brian’s AFTER BIRTH folder that was not his.

Emergency maternal incapacity affidavit.

It used a format from another firm.

Name:

Westlake Family Advocacy.

Who had access?

Marian Cole sometimes referred Blue Ridge families there.

Maybe Brian downloaded from program.

No need deeper conspiracy.

Then Brian’s file metadata showed he downloaded it from a public legal resource site.

Not secret.

Again.

No hidden mastermind required.

Then the larger legal picture began stabilizing.

Assault evidence:

Audio.

Sarah witness.

Helen witness.

Injuries.

Brian’s own scripts.

Financial coercion:

Bank restrictions.

Forged home equity line.

Fake refinancing documents.

Medical interference:

Portal manipulation.

Unauthorized access.

Blue Ridge false sponsorship.

Identity impersonation.

Custody planning:

Not illegal by itself.

Manipulated evidence around it was.

Kendra faced her own investigation.

Marian faced professional and possibly legal consequences for misrepresentations.

David Sloan was not accomplice.

Mark Dorsey was not accomplice.

Dr. Morris was not accomplice.

Paula had made mistakes but had warned Brian.

The story became clearer.

Then my attorney found the safe deposit box.

Brian rented it one year earlier.

Only his name.

Inside were:

My passport.

A copy of my birth certificate.

Social Security card photocopy.

Prenatal insurance documents.

Sarah’s signature scans.

My mother’s signature scans.

Kendra’s notary seal copy.

Patricia’s old templates.

And cash.

Fourteen thousand dollars.

Some mine.

Then one envelope:

FOR FRIDAY.

Inside:

The refinance final packet.

Blue Ridge intake.

A prepaid phone.

A bus schedule.

My bus schedule.

He had printed it.

Then another envelope:

IF CLAIRE LEAVES ANYWAY.

Inside:

Copies of custody templates.

Screenshots.

Medical questionnaires.

And an address.

Sarah’s apartment.

He knew where I would go.

Then a photograph.

Sarah entering her building.

Taken from across the street.

Not by Brian.

Metadata from a private investigator.

Name:

Elliot Marsh.

Brian paid him two thousand dollars.

Task:

Confirm potential relocation address.

Marsh said he believed it was ordinary divorce preparation.

He did not know about abuse.

He photographed only public exterior activity.

Still.

Brian had mapped my escape before I made it.

Then one more item inside the safe deposit box.

A Blue Ridge file.

Not mine.

Emily Ross.

Why keep it?

Brian had copied her old intake years ago.

Highlighted sections.

Family concern.

Patient requests discharge.

Partner reports instability.

Then the final page.

Handwritten by Brian:

What I did wrong last time:

Too emotional.

No documentation.

No financial leverage.

No neutral professionals.

I stopped breathing.

Below:

Next time:

Build record first.

Sarah started crying.

“This was before you?”

The handwriting date:

Six years ago.

Two years before Brian met me.

He had turned the failure of his relationship with Emily into a lesson plan.

May you like

And I had eventually become the “next time.”

Continue to the next part: Brian’s private notes show he spent years turning his failed relationship with Emily into a blueprint for controlling a future partner, but one final document suggests he may have tested that blueprint on someone else before Claire.
