Chapter 8 - The Man Who Left the Hospital Twice

The man in the nursery looked like Kenneth.

The hospital still held Kenneth under guard.

Detective Mills verified the room personally.

Kenneth lay in bed recovering from surgery, complaining through his attorney that police harassment endangered his health.

He could not be in both places.

The nursery figure wore his face through a realistic mask.

Rollins Global had funded identity security research using flexible biometric materials.

Kenneth knew the vendors.

Charles knew them.

The masked man moved with an older posture.

He placed my evidence folder on a table and opened it.

The folder inside the nursery was a copy.

Every photograph and bank record appeared in the same order as my original.

Someone had photographed it while I stood in the hospital.

The final sealed document was missing from my folder when I returned to Grace’s office.

The nursery figure now held it.

He opened the envelope.

A medical directive appointed Charles Benton as controller of all Project Seven children if Kenneth became legally compromised.

The affair exposure activated the next guardian.

Kenneth had never been the highest authority.

He was another temporary manager.

The masked man removed Kenneth’s face.

Charles Benton appeared underneath.

No stroke.

No weakness.

He looked directly into the nursery camera.

“Sabrina will search for the children before protecting the company.”

A woman beyond the frame answered:

“That is what mothers do.”

Lila Avery entered.

Elsie woke.

The second girl sat up beside her.

Both called Lila Mom.

My chest tightened.

Biology did not automatically define the person children trusted.

Lila had apparently raised them with Celeste for years.

She had also hidden them from me.

Charles told the girls to dress.

Lila refused.

“You said Red Haven was the last move.”

“The safe was opened.”

“That was the purpose.”

“No. The purpose was to measure Sabrina’s response.”

My marriage, the affair, the hospital, and the safe had become another test designed by people who treated human reaction as data.

Charles wanted to know whether I protected the corporation or searched for the children.

He believed my choice would determine whether I deserved access to the maternal trust.

I did not need his approval.

The law did not require his moral test.

The children still depended on finding him.

The live feed contained location metadata hidden inside the audio channel.

Rollins engineers traced it to an underground facility beneath our corporate data center in Wyoming.

The board had approved construction as a disaster recovery bunker.

Kenneth supervised it.

Justin signed the operational budget.

I approved the financing after being told it protected hospital clients during cyberattacks.

Family signatures funded another prison.

A federal team prepared entry.

Charles sent a message before they arrived.

Release Kenneth and restore his executive authority, or the nursery disappears from the network.

We refused.

The feed went dark.

The facility’s emergency system sealed itself.

Rollins security warned that forcing entry could destroy servers containing Project Seven identities.

Grace looked toward me.

“They are tying the children to the evidence again.”

“They think I will trade accountability for access.”

“What will you do?”

“Preserve both.”

I contacted the independent board committee.

We transferred every available Project Seven file to an external evidence receiver.

Then Rollins engineers disabled the bunker’s ability to delete remote backups.

The company had built the locks.

We used the same knowledge to remove Charles’s control.

Federal agents entered through the cooling system.

They found Lila inside the nursery corridor.

Charles had taken both girls through a lower tunnel.

Lila surrendered.

Her first question concerned the children.

Her second concerned immunity.

Again, protection and self interest arrived together.

During interrogation, Lila admitted raising Elsie and a girl named Nora.

Independent records suggested both came from my embryos.

She refused to reveal Nora’s paternal source until genetic testing.

“Why hide them from me?” I asked through a protected interview.

“Because Kenneth controlled your medical decisions.”

“You could have contacted me after you removed the implant records.”

“Charles said you knew.”

“You believed the synthetic voice.”

“For a while.”

“And later?”

Lila looked away.

“Later, the girls called me Mom.”

The truth became more painful.

She feared losing them.

She transformed temporary protection into permanent possession.

“I love them,” she said.

“You may.”

“I kept them safe.”

“You also kept them from knowing me.”

“You were busy running a company.”

The same accusation Kenneth used.

Motherhood measured against work only when someone wanted to justify taking a woman’s child.

“Where did Charles take them?”

“He has three exit houses.”

“Which one?”

“I do not know.”

“Then what do you know?”

“Elsie carries a tracking capsule beneath her medical bracelet.”

The bracelet had been implanted with a small location device during a childhood procedure.

Lila authorized it.

She called it protection.

The girls had spent their lives surrounded by adults putting technology into their bodies without informed consent.

The signal moved east toward Denver.

Charles was bringing them closer to me.

Not escaping.

Preparing another confrontation.

Meanwhile, Kenneth filed an emergency motion from the hospital.

He claimed I had intentionally injured him and Maya, stolen private property from his safe, and used corporate power to abduct his children from their lawful guardian.

His filing publicly acknowledged Elsie and Nora for the first time.

He identified himself as father of both.

If true, he could request parental rights.

If false, he had committed another fraud.

The court scheduled an emergency hearing.

Kenneth wanted the girls’ identities decided before independent testing.

May you like

He expected Charles to produce them at court.

Continue to the next part: Kenneth publicly claims both hidden girls as his daughters before anyone can test whose children they truly are.
