Chapter 4 - The Money behind the Hotel Rooms

The hotel reservations were never only about sex.

Kenneth and Maya used rooms in Aspen, Boulder, Colorado Springs, and Santa Fe to meet executives from Helix North.

Rollins Global had developed a secure logistics platform called Sentinel.

Hospitals, pharmacies, emergency transport providers, and research laboratories used it to move sensitive materials without exposing patient identities.

The platform was worth billions.

Kenneth sold portions of its source architecture while pretending to negotiate ordinary transport contracts.

Maya attended because Justin controlled operational access.

She copied authentication tokens from his home office.

Kenneth used those tokens to extract restricted files.

The forty two million dollars represented advance payments.

Part of the money funded the fertility scheme.

Part funded shell companies.

Part disappeared into a trust connected to Elsie.

The affair gave them private time.

The corporate theft gave Kenneth leverage over Maya.

The hidden child gave him leverage over me.

Every betrayal reinforced another.

Rollins Global’s board convened an emergency meeting that afternoon.

I attended remotely from Grace’s office.

Justin sat across from me.

Kenneth’s attorney joined from the hospital and objected to both of us participating because we were emotionally compromised.

Board chairman Douglas Vale looked toward me.

“Sabrina, law enforcement is also investigating your deliberate use of industrial adhesive.”

“Yes.”

“Do you deny it?”

“No.”

Several directors shifted uncomfortably.

I continued.

“My conduct is under independent investigation. It does not make Kenneth’s transfers legitimate.”

Kenneth’s attorney argued that my actions showed instability and poor judgment.

He asked the board to place Kenneth on medical leave rather than remove his access.

Then he requested that my voting authority be suspended until the criminal matter ended.

The strategy was familiar.

Turn my retaliation into the only event worth examining.

Use my worst decision to erase theirs.

I did not defend the adhesive.

I presented the records.

The safe ledger.

The shell accounts.

The hotel photographs.

The copied credentials.

The medical payments.

The board voted to suspend Kenneth and freeze every transaction involving Helix North.

They also appointed an independent committee to review my conduct.

I supported it.

Accountability should not depend on which side has more evidence against the other.

After the meeting, Justin asked why I had not fought the committee.

“Because I did what they are investigating.”

“Kenneth will use it.”

“He already is.”

“You could lose your position.”

“Yes.”

“You sound like that does not scare you.”

“It scares me less than becoming him.”

The financial examiner traced the largest payment to Black Orchard Holdings.

The company’s registered manager was Celeste Ward.

The nurse caring for Elsie had received twelve million dollars through Kenneth’s shell network.

She was not merely protecting a child.

She was being paid.

Another transfer went to North Canyon Women’s Center, a closed maternity residence outside Colorado Springs.

The newborn bracelet came from that facility.

Police searched the building after obtaining a warrant.

Most rooms had been stripped.

One locked archive remained.

Inside were surrogate agreements, altered birth certificates, and records for six Project Seven pregnancies.

My embryos were not the only genetic material transferred without clear consent.

Meridian Reproductive Institute had diverted embryos from other patients labeled medically unsuitable.

Some were told fertilization failed.

Others were told embryos had been destroyed.

Private recipients paid through Black Orchard.

Kenneth’s scheme connected to a broader market.

Dr. Pierce denied knowing about the maternity center despite his sister managing its accounts.

The archive contained his fingerprints and signatures.

One file concerned Elsie.

Genetic source Sabrina Rollins and Kenneth Rollins.

Gestational carrier anonymous.

Legal parent at birth Celeste Ward.

Provisional guardian Kenneth Rollins.

Maternal identity restricted.

The signature attributed to me appeared again.

Forged.

Elsie had been legally separated from me before she was born.

The second transferred embryo had also produced a live pregnancy.

The outcome restricted phrase concealed another birth.

A note said:

Patient B removed before registration.

No name.

No date of birth.

No location.

Two embryos had resulted in two children.

Kenneth admitted knowledge of only one.

Either he was lying again, or someone inside Meridian had hidden the second child from him.

Grace placed both files side by side.

“Do not assume they are twins.”

“They came from the same retrieval.”

“They may have been transferred at different times.”

“Both are mine.”

“Genetically, if the records are authentic.”

The qualification mattered.

Every document in the case had passed through people who forged signatures.

Independent testing would be required.

Detective Mills recovered surveillance from North Canyon.

Four years earlier, Kenneth entered carrying flowers.

Hours later, Celeste carried a newborn through the rear hall.

A second woman left the building with another infant the same night.

The woman wore a hospital mask and a dark coat.

Maya’s current driver’s license photograph produced a possible facial match.

Justin stared at the still image.

“Maya took the second baby?”

“We do not know,” I said.

The timestamp showed she had been inside North Canyon four years before claiming she learned about Elsie.

Her story had begun changing again.

Continue to the next part: Surveillance places Maya at the maternity center on the night both hidden children were born.
