Chapter 5 - THE MISTRESS WHO EXPECTED TO BECOME MY REPLACEMENT
Vanessa requested an interview through her attorney.
She did not begin with remorse.
She began with self preservation.
“Adrian told me Mara wanted an open marriage.”
Detective Shaw placed their messages on the table.
Vanessa lowered her eyes.
“He said the marriage was over emotionally.”
“Did that make the financial transfers lawful?”
“No.”
“Did you perform the consulting work listed on the invoices?”
“Some of it.”
“How much?”
She could not answer.
Vanessa’s company received nearly eight million dollars over two years.
A portion paid for actual event planning and investor introductions.
The rest funded travel, jewelry, an apartment in Chicago, and a house Adrian promised to place in her name.
She believed the final capital raise would allow him to leave me without losing access to my trust.
Then Detective Shaw showed her a document recovered from Adrian’s office.
It proposed a new family trust after the twins were born.
Adrian would manage the children’s interests.
My assets would secure Whitmore Capital’s obligations.
If I became medically unable to act, he would gain temporary authority over distributions.
My signature line remained blank.
Vanessa stared at it.
“He told me the twins would have nothing to do with the company.”
“They were the collateral source,” her attorney said quietly.
Adrian had not merely wanted a wealthy wife.
He wanted heirs whose trust interests could strengthen his borrowing position.
Vanessa finally understood that he never planned to make her equal.
He planned to use her company until the fraud became public, then blame her for the invoices.
She provided access to a hidden message account.
One conversation occurred the night before the party.
VANESSA: MARA LOOKS SICK.
ADRIAN: SHE IS FINE.
VANESSA: WHAT IF THE DOCTOR PUTS HER IN THE HOSPITAL?
ADRIAN: THEN I GET THE GUARANTEE BEFORE SHE GOES.
VANESSA: YOU SAID YOU WOULD NOT TOUCH HER AGAIN.
ADRIAN: DO NOT BECOME SENTIMENTAL NOW.
Vanessa had known there was prior violence.
She still entered the bedroom and mocked me.
Her later cooperation did not erase that choice.
It did help investigators establish Adrian’s planning and financial motive.
She accepted responsibility for false invoices and agreed to return assets purchased with disputed company money.
Her consequences would be determined separately from Adrian’s.
At the hospital, contractions gradually slowed.
Dr. Lawson told me the twins remained stable but the pregnancy would require closer monitoring.
“You cannot return to that environment.”
“I will not.”
The trust’s counsel arranged a secure residence near the hospital.
Adrian was prohibited from contacting me directly under a temporary protection order based on the recording, witness statements, and medical evidence.
The order did not decide every future issue.
It created immediate safety.
My mother arrived from Boston the following morning.
She did not ask why I stayed so long.
She sat beside the bed and held my hand.
That mercy nearly broke me.
“I thought patience would make him gentler,” I said.
She looked toward the monitors.
“Cruel people often interpret patience as permission.”
I closed my eyes.
“I should have left before the twins were in danger.”
“You are leaving now.”
Not everything had to become another accusation against me.
Adrian was responsible for dragging me.
Vanessa was responsible for watching and encouraging him.
