Chapter 1 - THE WOMAN ON THE BEDROOM FLOOR

The first thing I felt was my shoulder striking the hardwood.

The second was the violent tightening beneath my ribs.

I lay beside the tall bed in my cream silk nightgown, one hand pressed over my pregnant belly while Adrian kept his fingers locked around my ankle.

Warm amber light softened the bedroom walls.

It could not soften him.

“Get up and serve my guests.”

His voice remained low because he did not want the investors downstairs to hear what kind of man they were funding.

Music pulsed through the floorboards.

Laughter rose from the grand lounge.

Someone shouted for another bottle of champagne.

In the doorway, Vanessa Cole lifted my crystal flute toward me and smiled.

“Stop acting helpless, Mara.”

Her fitted black dress caught the hallway light. My husband’s mistress looked entirely comfortable inside my home, drinking from my glass while watching me struggle to breathe.

Adrian released my ankle only to crouch beside me.

“You have embarrassed me long enough.”

“My doctor ordered strict bed rest.”

“Your doctor is not downstairs deciding whether Whitmore Capital survives the quarter.”

A cramp tightened low in my abdomen.

I closed my eyes and counted through it.

One.

Two.

Three.

The twins had been moving earlier.

Now I felt only pressure and fear.

Adrian mistook my silence for surrender.

He leaned closer.

“These people expect hospitality. You are my wife. Get dressed and make yourself useful.”

Vanessa laughed softly.

“She has been using this pregnancy to control you for months.”

My bruised cheek rested against the floor.

I did not answer her.

Adrian fed on visible fear. Vanessa fed on humiliation. I would give them neither.

My fingers moved beneath the edge of the bed.

The cracked phone was exactly where Adrian had knocked it from my hand earlier.

He noticed me reaching.

“Calling an ambulance?”

“No.”

My voice barely passed my lips.

His smile thinned.

“Then who?”

I unlocked the phone with my thumb.

The secure authorization portal opened behind a blank privacy screen.

Adrian knew I inherited money.

He did not know what my father had built before his death.

He did not know that Whitmore Capital had survived its last three failures only because a private lending trust purchased its debt.

He did not know I controlled that trust.

Most importantly, he did not know the final authorization had been waiting for my approval since his auditors discovered he had diverted company money into Vanessa’s consulting firms.

My hand trembled as I entered the code.

Adrian glanced toward Vanessa.

“She is trying to frighten us.”

I pressed the final authorization.

Across the room, his jacket began vibrating.

Then the phone on his bedside table.

Then Vanessa’s handbag.

I kept one palm over my stomach and raised my eyes to my husband.

“Your company is gone.”

May you like

For the first time that night, Adrian stopped smiling.

Continue to the next part: Adrian tries to seize the phone, but the party downstairs receives the same emergency notice before he can erase what Mara authorized.
