Chapter 2 - THE CALL THAT ENDED THE PARTY

Adrian grabbed for my phone.

I pulled it against my chest.

The movement sent another cramp through me, sharp enough to steal my breath.

Vanessa crossed the room.

“What did she do?”

“Nothing,” Adrian said.

His voice was too fast.

His phone continued vibrating inside his jacket.

He took it out and stared at the screen.

The color left his face.

“What is Mercer Vale?”

I almost laughed.

Mercer Vale Fiduciary Trust was the senior secured lender holding most of Whitmore Capital’s debt.

It also held warrants allowing conversion into voting equity if Adrian violated financial covenants.

He had violated them repeatedly.

Related party payments.

Undisclosed personal guarantees.

False investor statements.

Company funds transferred to Vanessa’s design and consulting entities.

My authorization did not complete an instant takeover.

It activated the enforcement process Adrian had been warned about and hidden from his partners.

The company was not gone in a literal second.

His control was.

Footsteps approached in the hallway.

Three investors appeared behind Vanessa.

One held his phone in front of him.

“Adrian, why did we receive notice that the credit facility has been accelerated?”

Adrian rose quickly.

“This is a technical mistake.”

Another investor looked toward me on the floor.

“What happened to your wife?”

Vanessa stepped between them.

“She slipped.”

I looked directly at the men.

“My husband dragged me from bed.”

The room became silent.

Adrian turned toward me with naked hatred.

“Mara is medicated and confused.”

I lifted my cracked phone.

The recording indicator remained active.

“I started recording before you touched me.”

His jaw clenched.

One investor moved toward the bed.

“Should we call emergency services?”

“Yes,” I said.

“No,” Adrian answered at the same time.

Every person in the doorway looked at him.

His mistake registered immediately.

He changed his tone.

“She becomes anxious when strangers intervene.”

Vanessa reached for my phone.

I moved it beneath my shoulder.

“Do not touch me.”

“Give me the phone,” Adrian said.

A man named Thomas Reed, one of Whitmore Capital’s largest outside partners, stepped between us.

“Back away from her.”

Adrian stared at him.

“This is my bedroom.”

Thomas looked at the bruising on my cheek.

“Then explain why your pregnant wife is on the floor.”

The party had begun to empty into the hallway.

Women in evening dresses stood frozen beside men who had spent years praising Adrian’s discipline and judgment.

No one laughed now.

My phone connected to emergency services through an automated safety command built into the financial authorization.

A dispatcher’s voice came through the speaker.

“Mara Whitmore, can you hear me?”

“Yes.”

“Are you injured?”

“I am pregnant with twins. I am on strict bed rest. My husband dragged me from bed.”

The dispatcher asked whether I could move safely.

“I do not know.”

Adrian’s confidence fractured.

“Mara, stop this. We can discuss the company privately.”

I looked at him.

“You lost the right to ask for privacy when you made my pain entertainment.”

Vanessa lowered the champagne flute.

The financial notice on her phone showed that every payment to her companies had been frozen pending audit.

Her amusement disappeared.
