Chapter 3 - THE TWINS BEHIND THE HOSPITAL DOOR

The ambulance arrived in nine minutes.

I was placed on a stretcher without being forced to stand.

Adrian tried to follow.

A police officer stopped him in the hall.

“She is my wife.”

“She has requested that you remain away from her.”

“This is a misunderstanding.”

The officer looked toward the witnesses lining the corridor.

“Then everyone will provide statements.”

Vanessa remained near the bedroom doorway holding the same flute.

Thomas pointed toward it.

“That belongs to Mara.”

Vanessa set it down as though the glass had suddenly become evidence.

At Lakeview Women’s Hospital, doctors connected me to fetal monitors.

Two heartbeats appeared.

Both fast.

Both present.

I started crying before anyone told me whether the twins were safe.

Dr. Rachel Lawson examined me and ordered medication to reduce contractions.

There was no immediate labor, but the fall and stress had created a serious risk.

I was admitted for observation.

My cheek was bruised.

My shoulder was strained.

There was no fracture and no visible bleeding.

The absence of catastrophic injury did not erase what Adrian had done.

Detective Caroline Shaw interviewed me only after the physician confirmed I was stable enough.

I described the argument before the party.

Adrian had demanded I attend.

I refused because my specialist had ordered bed rest after cervical changes appeared during the previous appointment.

He accused me of trying to embarrass him in front of investors.

When I locked the bedroom door, he used the master key.

He pulled the blankets away.

Then he dragged me from the bed by my ankles.

“Did he strike your face?” Detective Shaw asked.

“Two days earlier.”

“Did you report it?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because he apologized. Then he told me stress made me remember things dramatically.”

I heard how fragile the explanation sounded.

Vanessa had arrived before the party and entered my bedroom wearing a black dress Adrian purchased through a company card.

She called me weak.

She told me Adrian deserved a woman who could support his ambitions.

I had not known she would watch him drag me.

I had known about the affair for four months.

That discovery was why Mercer Vale began examining every payment connected to her.

My father created the trust before he died. Its purpose was to protect my inheritance from reckless investments and abusive control.

Adrian persuaded the trustees to finance Whitmore Capital during our marriage.

He believed the lender was independent.

The trust documents prevented me from interfering casually, but they allowed me to authorize enforcement after independent counsel confirmed fraud and covenant defaults.

The evidence package was completed that afternoon.

I had delayed pressing the button.

Part of me still hoped Adrian would admit what he had done and step down voluntarily.

Then he dragged me across the floor.

My decision was not spontaneous revenge.

It was the final approval on a process already supported by audits, contracts, and outside trustees.

Detective Shaw looked toward the monitors.

“Did you authorize the takeover because he assaulted you?”

“I authorized enforcement because the company records justified it.”

“And the timing?”

I watched the two heartbeats.

May you like

“The timing was when I stopped protecting him.”

Continue to the next part: Adrian claims Mara planned the entire confrontation, but the mansion recording captures him admitting that the party was designed to force her signature.
