Chapter 23 - Sarah’s Evidence Bag
Sarah retired from active litigation when Hazel was twenty two.
She invited me to lunch.
Brought an old black evidence bag.
I laughed.
“Please no.”
“Relax. It’s empty.”
“Why?”
“I found same model cleaning office and thought you’d hate.”
I did.
Then she handed me a small envelope.
The original hospital recording had been retained digitally through cases.
My phone itself long gone.
Inside envelope:
The pen Julian forced into my hand.
Police had eventually released after evidence retention.
I stared.
“Why do you have this?”
“You authorized my office to receive property years ago.”
“I forgot.”
“Want?”
“No.”
“Good.”
We threw? Evidence now released, can discard. I said shred? It's pen. We tossed in restaurant trash? Too symbolic. Better I left for office supplies? Hmm.
Sarah said:
“Then we’ll dispose securely.”
No ceremony.
Then she asked:
“Do you remember what you said?”
“Keep talking.”
“No. Before.”
I thought.
“I told Hazel daddy’s here?”
No.
“You told Julian no.”
Again.
Patterns.
Then Sarah said:
“You never needed recording to make no valid.”
That mattered.
Evidence helped court.
But consent was absent even without.
Then final trust files.
All appeals exhausted.
Restitution satisfaction notices entered.
Vance claims closed.
No open fraud litigation.
Company insurer closed.
Mercer Capital dissolved.
Vale dissolved.
Eleanor estate resolved.
Victoria restitution satisfied.
Julian continued final restitution? By then maybe satisfied. Let's say completed at 51 after release through sale of remaining investment account and wages.
No pending claims.
Sarah transferred estate representation to younger partner.
I updated trust.
Hazel now adult and informed.
At eighteen, she received complete beneficiary statement.
Every asset.
Every rule.
No secret.
At twenty five, she could become co-trustee? Dad’s original maybe. I amended within powers? Let's say trust terms allowed independent trustee and beneficiary committee. She chose not.
“I don’t want company.”
“Good.”
I laughed.
She became veterinarian? Could choose career unrelated. We earlier have no adult career. Let's decide she studied architecture? Since company development, could be. Maybe she becomes pediatric physical therapist because of mother's rehab? Too cliché. Let's choose marine biologist? Lake? Not needed.
She studied environmental engineering.
Worked in water systems.
No Vance Development obligation.
