Chapter 21 - Hazel’s Father

Hazel was eleven when Julian was released.

He had served almost ten years with credits and correction.

She knew he existed.

I never told her:

“Your father is dead.”

Never erased photos.

I also did not tell a toddler courtroom details.

Age appropriate.

At five:

“Your dad made serious choices that meant he had to live somewhere else.”

At eight:

“He broke laws involving Mommy’s company and tried to take control when I was sick.”

At ten:

“He is in prison because a court found he committed financial crimes and threatened me.”

Then release.

Julian petitioned family court for contact.

I knew he might.

He had completed prison programs.

No disciplinary violence.

Paid some restitution from prison earnings/assets.

Wrote Hazel annual letters through attorney, which I stored.

She had never read.

Court ordered therapeutic evaluation before contact.

Hazel had her own guardian ad litem.

This was not mine alone.

At eleven, Hazel said:

“I don’t want to meet him.”

The court gave weight, not absolute.

Therapist recommended no forced in-person initially.

Julian allowed to send monitored letters.

Hazel could choose.

She read first at twelve.

Dear Hazel,

I am your father. I have no right to ask you to forgive choices you did not make.

Then childhood memories? He had only months.

He wrote about holding her.

No blame toward me.

Good.

Hazel did not respond.

At thirteen she wrote:

I know who you are. I don’t want visits.

Julian responded through approved channel:

I understand.

Court kept no in-person.

At fifteen, she asked:

“Can I see him once?”

My stomach stopped.

“Why?”

“I want face.”

Therapist arranged.

Neutral office.

I waited elsewhere.

Julian was forty nine.

Hazel fifteen.

He cried.

She did not.

Later she told me:

“He looks like me.”

“Yes.”

“He said he was sorry.”

“How feel?”

“Nothing yet.”

Then:

“He asked about school. He didn’t ask about company.”

Good.

She chose one more visit a year later.

Then none.

At eighteen, family court jurisdiction ended.

Her choice completely.

She sent:

I don’t hate you, but I don’t want a father-daughter relationship. Please respect that.

Julian replied:

I will.

He did.

No stalking.

No hidden comeback.

He worked after release in operations for a small manufacturing company under restrictions; not fiduciary role initially.

No new known crimes.

Paid restitution until satisfied through asset forfeiture/payment plan over years.

His life continued.

May you like

Separate.

That was closure more real than death.
