Chapter 24 - The Last Recording

At forty two, the government contacted me about final archival disposition of the flash drive.
Original belonged to Elias.
Mara was dead.
Her estate designated personal effects to me and a cousin, but classified portions remained government property or controlled copies.
Legal process sorted.
I did not want full drive back.
Too much.
The government returned only cleared personal files.
Elias’s video.
Birthday note scans.
Photographs.
No helmet camera classified files.
Those remained official archive.
I watched Elias’s personal video one final time.
“Claire, if you’re seeing this, something went wrong.”
He smiled tiredly.
“Austin is lying about why we’re moving through Darin Valley.”
Then later in same recording:
“But don’t turn this into one story.”
He had said that before letter too.
“Dad being your father is one truth. Valiant is another. Austin being scared is another. Richard being Richard is probably ten truths.”
I laughed.
Then:
“People get stupid when they make everything evidence of one theory.”
He was right.
Austin did not leave Elias solely because of paternity.
Richard did not manipulate Valiant solely because he hated Samuel.
Catherine did not lie solely because Richard terrified her.
People had multiple motives.
Some selfish.
Some fearful.
Some loving.
Then Elias said:
“If I get home, I’m taking you somewhere with decent coffee.”
I cried.
Then stopped video.
No need watch again.
I saved one copy with family archive.
Not on phone.
Then flash drive itself?
Government cleared casing after data sanitized and returned personal property.
I could keep black plastic shell.
I threw it away.
Naomi was horrified.
“That thing started everything.”
“No.”
“What did?”
“Richard’s fist.”
Then corrected.
“No.”
“What?”
“Elias telling truth before he died.”
Maybe.
Then I laughed.
“See? We’re doing narrative again.”
Naomi smiled.
“You’re impossible.”
Then last legal case.
Richard completed supervised release.
Federal contracting debarment expired but he never returned.
Austin’s restitution/penalties fully paid.
Valiant settlement completed.
Northbridge monitoring ended.
No pending appeals.
No sealed indictment.
No hidden co conspirator.
All known cases closed.
That mattered.
Then Richard developed congestive heart failure.
Not immediate death.
He asked to see me more.
I decided:
Once a month.
My choice.
Catherine did not come.
Austin sometimes.
One afternoon Richard said:
“I should have told you about Samuel.”
“Yes.”
“I thought fatherhood was something I could secure by controlling information.”
“Yes.”
Then:
“When you learned, I thought I had lost.”
“You did lose something.”
“What?”
“The right to decide what I knew.”
He nodded.
Then:
“Did I lose you?”
I thought.
“Not completely.”
He closed eyes.
That was more than he expected.
Then I asked something that had haunted.
“When you told Austin to control Elias before Kandahar, did you know how scared Austin was of disappointing you?”
“Yes.”
“Did you use that?”
“Yes.”
No excuse.
Then:
“Do you think you killed Elias?”
Richard looked at me.
“No.”
I believed.
“Do you think you helped create conditions that harmed him?”
“Yes.”
There.
Enough.
Then he said:
“I’m sorry.”
I no longer needed to answer every apology.
We sat.
May you like
Quiet.
For first time silence between us protected nobody.
