Chapter 19 - The Official Record

The Army correction board took another year.
Slow.
Records are stubborn because they should be.
Changing official history requires evidence.
Elias’s casualty record was amended.
Death location:
Coalition surgical facility.
Time:
0916 following day.
Cause:
Wounds sustained in combat.
No change.
Then after action report.
Supplement added:
Original report incorrectly identified Captain Ward and Staff Sergeant Pike as killed at initial position before later recovery.
Investigation found Captain Waverly knew both were alive at time of first withdrawal and failed to accurately report status.
Then tactical finding:
Initial decision to withdraw under active fire was within range of reasonable command judgment.
That sentence angered some people.
I supported.
Truth.
Then:
Subsequent delay in providing corrected coordinates and casualty status was improper and contributed to delayed recovery.
Medical causation:
Could not determine whether delay changed Captain Ward’s ultimate survival outcome.
Precise.
Then valor citation.
Rescinded.
Public record noted award removed following finding that cited recovery attempt did not occur as described.
Austin’s other service records remained.
Then Valiant field report.
Corrected.
Prototype failures acknowledged.
Program later fixed.
No current safety issue.
Then Richard’s role.
Department barred him from federal contracting for a period.
Waverly Strategic renamed under new leadership? Maybe board chose "WSG Advisory" maybe no need.
Firm survived but Richard gone.
Employees kept jobs.
Then Samuel Ward.
Paternity was not military record.
Personal.
I considered amending birth certificate.
Georgia? Born maybe Virginia. Legal path possible with court and DNA evidence. Samuel dead, Richard legal father. Could potentially add biological parent through court, not simple. I consulted.
The attorney said:
“You do not need to do anything.”
Good.
I chose not to alter.
Why?
Richard was legally my father and raised me.
Samuel was biological father.
Paper could not comfortably contain both.
I created my own personal record.
A framed photograph of Samuel, Elias, Catherine and me from childhood.
Richard not in that one.
Then another family photograph with Richard and Austin.
I kept both.
Not display all.
History.
Then name.
Claire Waverly.
Stayed.
Mara asked:
“Sure?”
“Yes.”
“Samuel wouldn’t care.”
“How do you know?”
“He hated paperwork.”
I laughed.
Then Austin in prison.
He wrote me.
I waited six months.
Opened.
Claire,
Elias was your brother. I knew. I hated him for making me feel like I could lose you.
I stopped.
Lose me?
Then:
I thought if you knew, you would choose Ward family and decide we had been fake.
That fear seemed childish.
Austin continued:
Dad never told me to leave Elias to die.
I believe that.
Then:
He did teach me that facts can be arranged around the outcome you need.
That line.
Then:
The first withdrawal was not about paternity. I would make that decision again under same fire.
Important.
Then:
The nineteen minutes afterward were about me.
There.
“I was afraid rescue would expose wrong route, broken relay, and the fact Elias was alive enough to contradict me.”
Then:
“I do not know whether those minutes killed him.”
Neither did anyone.
Then:
“I will live knowing they might have.”
No request.
Then:
“I’m sorry I clapped when Dad hit you.”
I had almost forgotten among larger crimes.
He remembered.
Why clap?
“I wanted you punished for pulling down the story I had built my life around.”
Then:
“That may be the ugliest thing I did outside Kandahar.”
I sat with letter.
Then wrote back.
Austin,
I believe you did not want Elias dead.
That was first gift.
Then:
I also believe you chose yourself after he was wounded.
Both.
Then:
I am not ready for more.
Claire.
May you like
He did not respond for a year.
Good.
