Chapter 15 - The Birthday Card

Inside the card Elias wrote:

Claire,

You’re going to be furious with me soon.

Good.

You should be.

Then:

There is something Dad and Catherine should have told you years ago. I only learned recently, so I’m claiming partial innocence.

Then:

You’re my sister.

I stared at word until blurred.

Then:

Please do not make this weird.

Too late.

Then:

I have twenty years of sibling teasing to catch up on.

He listed:

Your coffee is terrible.

Your taste in men is worse. I was seventeen, what men? He was joking maybe.

Austin will act like truth changes family. It doesn’t.

Then final:

I love you. I’m sorry the adults were cowards.

E.

I laughed.

Cried.

Slept with card beside bed for weeks.

Then something shifted.

Kandahar investigation stopped being the only way I knew Elias.

I had childhood memories.

He let me ride his bicycle.

Taught me to whistle.

Once shoved Austin into pool because Austin ruined my birthday cake.

I had thought he was family friend.

He had been brother even before labels.

Then Austin.

My other brother.

Biological half? Austin and I share mother Catherine, different fathers. So half-siblings too.

Elias and Austin were not biologically related. Both my brothers through me, and family friend.

Austin had grown up with Elias as quasi cousin.

Then discovered Elias was my biological brother.

He interpreted as threat.

Why?

Inheritance?

No.

Samuel’s estate went to Mara and Elias, not me because paternity not legally acknowledged. Elias wanted to amend perhaps.

Richard feared scandal, not money.

Keep simple.

Then Samuel’s estate.

Mara voluntarily asked lawyer whether I had claim.

Probably no viable after decades and estate settled.

I said:

“I don’t want money.”

Mara answered:

“I wasn’t offering. I was checking.”

I laughed.

Good.

She gave me personal items instead.

Samuel’s letters.

Photographs.

No fortune twist.

Then federal case approached trial.

Austin considered plea.

His attorney negotiated.

He would admit false statements and procurement fraud conspiracy but not obstruction of casualty rescue.

Government wanted admission he knowingly reported Elias dead while aware alive.

He resisted.

That was the line he could not cross.

Then Catherine met him.

First time since banquet.

Through attorneys.

She later told me.

Austin said:

“Mom, if I say I knew, everyone thinks I killed him.”

Catherine answered:

“You did know.”

“I thought he would die.”

“That is not the same.”

He cried.

Then:

“Dad told me report needed to protect unit.”

Catherine:

“You chose to believe him.”

Austin:

“You did too.”

Silence.

True.

Then Catherine said:

“I’m not asking you to forgive me for that.”

Their family language changing.

Then Austin asked:

“Does Claire hate me?”

Catherine said:

“Ask Claire.”

He could not under no contact? No court no-contact? After ballroom no assault by Austin, maybe he can contact. I had refused.

Then Naomi asked again:

“Do you want to hear from him?”

“No.”

Not yet.

Then forensic reconstruction of radio logs concluded Austin delayed corrected coordinates nineteen minutes after being asked twice.

Could they prove deliberate?

A recovered text to Richard sent over sat device?

AUSTIN:

THEY’RE SENDING BACK FOR WARD.

RICHARD:

YOU NEED TO GET YOUR MEN OUT AND STOP LETTING ELIAS RUN THIS MISSION FROM THE GROUND.

Austin:

HE’S ALIVE.

Richard:

THEN LET RESCUE OWN IT. YOU MOVE.

This message showed Richard told Austin not to interfere further, but not to delay coordinates.

Then:

AUSTIN:

IF HE LIVES HE TALKS.

Richard did not reply for four minutes.

Then:

GET OFF THIS CHANNEL.

There.

Austin had thought it.

If he lives he talks.

Not same as:

Make sure he dies.

But awful.

May you like

Then prosecutors confronted Austin.

His plea negotiations changed.
