Chapter 12 - Catherine

My mother’s full statement lasted six hours.

She admitted things I did not know.

Richard never hit her with closed fist.

He had shoved her once.

Thrown objects.

Blocked doors.

Controlled money.

Threatened divorce.

Threatened to tell me she was adulterer who “tricked” him into raising another man’s child.

He did not have to beat her daily to control.

Then she admitted her own choices.

She enjoyed status.

General’s wife.

Galas.

Travel.

House.

She feared losing it.

Not only Richard.

That mattered.

Then Samuel.

She loved him.

Maybe always.

Even after choosing Richard.

Samuel wrote for years.

She answered sometimes.

Richard knew some.

Not all.

Then when Samuel died, Catherine attended funeral beside Richard.

Elias hugged her.

She almost told him everything.

Didn’t.

Then Elias discovered through father’s documents months later.

He called.

“Aunt Catherine, is Claire my sister?”

She cried.

“Yes.”

Then:

“Tell her.”

“I can’t.”

“You can.”

“No.”

He became angry.

“You all keep saying can’t when you mean won’t.”

That sentence stayed.

Then Austin found out.

He confronted Catherine.

“How could you do this to Dad?”

Not:

How could you hide from Claire?

His loyalty went to Richard.

Catherine said:

“You don’t understand.”

Austin:

“I understand Claire isn’t his.”

Then Catherine slapped him.

First time.

Austin laughed.

“Finally.”

Family violence had long history even before ballroom.

Then months later, Austin and Elias argued at Christmas dinner.

Not physical.

Elias:

“Claire deserves to know.”

Austin:

“You want to take her from us.”

Elias:

“She’s not furniture.”

Richard ended dinner.

Later he told Catherine:

“If Elias opens this, I’ll make sure his father’s reputation is dragged with it.”

Then Valiant.

Catherine heard Richard and Austin discussing.

Not details.

Richard:

“You do not let Ward turn a field trial into a crusade.”

Austin:

“He has data.”

Richard:

“Then outwork him.”

No murder order.

Then after Kandahar.

Austin called Catherine crying.

“He’s alive.”

“What?”

“Elias.”

Then:

“I left him.”

Catherine begged him to tell truth.

Austin said:

“Dad says if I change report now I’m finished.”

Catherine told Richard:

“Let him tell them.”

Richard grabbed her arm.

Hard.

“You want both sons destroyed?”

Both sons.

He never considered Elias son, but perhaps speaking Samuel’s and ours? Hmm better "You want Austin destroyed for a dead man?" Let's correct. Richard said:

“You want our son destroyed for a man who is already dead?”

Catherine went silent.

Then she printed emails.

Why?

Insurance.

Fear.

Maybe someday.

She never used.

Then original inquiry investigator called.

“Was there family conflict between Captain Waverly and Captain Ward?”

Catherine answered:

“No.”

She lied.

Why?

“Richard was standing beside me.”

The investigator did not insist on private interview.

System failure.

Then she watched Austin receive medal.

Smiled.

At ceremony.

Inside, knew citation wrong.

She accepted.

Then ballroom eight years later.

Why smile when Richard hit me?

Catherine answered:

“I didn’t know I was smiling.”

Trauma response.

Maybe.

Video showed immediate freeze.

Then she tried to leave.

Why?

“I thought Richard would kill me if truth came out.”

Had he threatened death?

No direct.

Her fear extrapolated.

Then why had she not warned me before party after I confronted Austin?

She did not know I would play drive.

She thought I would stay quiet like always.

That was an indictment of me and her.

Then separation.

Catherine moved into a condo.

Financially, marital estate complex.

Richard’s firm value.

Homes.

She had independent assets too.

No helpless wife narrative.

She could have left materially.

Fear was psychological and social as much as financial.

Then she entered therapy.

Not quick redemption.

Our relationship stayed limited.

I told her:

“You let me believe Richard was my biological father.”

“Yes.”

“You let Elias die knowing he was my brother.”

She flinched.

“I didn’t let him die.”

“No. But you let me mourn him without knowing.”

“Yes.”

That distinction.

Then:

“I don’t know if I can forgive you.”

“I know.”

“Stop saying that.”

She nodded.

Then laughed unexpectedly.

“Your brother said the same thing.”

“Elias?”

“Yes.”

I started crying.

A piece of him lived in conversations I never had.

Then Catherine gave me a photograph.

Elias at twelve holding infant? Ages: Elias 3 years older, so if Claire newborn, Elias 3. Better photograph of Elias age 7, Claire 4 on porch, Samuel behind. We had seen many. This one had Samuel’s handwriting:

My two impossible children.

I stared.

“Did Richard see this?”

“No.”

“Why keep?”

“Because some lies were too painful to make complete.”

Then investigators called.

Valiant’s former vice president agreed to cooperate.

He had emails proving Richard asked the company to pay Waverly Strategic a special success fee specifically for “containment of Kandahar reporting.”

May you like

Containment.

The word prosecutors had been waiting for.
