Chapter 6 - Daniel’s Blind Spot

My son had a bad habit.

If problem did not announce itself directly, he assumed it did not exist.

As child, he ignored leaking faucet until ceiling stained.

As adult, he believed competent people would tell him when they needed help.

Megan had been telling him.

Not truth.

But distress.

“I can’t do this.”

“I'm exhausted.”

“He never sleeps.”

Daniel responded:

“You’re doing great.”

He thought reassurance.

Maybe she heard dismissal.

Then:

“Can your mom help?”

Megan hated asking Patricia? Yet Patricia visited. She preferred own mother over me. Daniel said:

“Have your mom stay.”

Patricia did.

But Patricia reinforced secrecy instead of safe help.

Daniel did not take parental leave beyond first week because he was leading software implementation for regional bank? Let's pick profession. He was a commercial construction project manager maybe long onsite hours. Fine.

He worked six days some weeks.

Income pressure.

Mortgage.

But he could have taken more.

He had paid leave available for two more weeks.

He saved it “for later.”

Later never came before harm.

Daniel told therapist:

“I thought providing money was helping.”

Then:

“I thought if Megan needed me, she’d say.”

She did, in imperfect ways.

Then he saw mark once.

A red patch under Noah’s arm.

Megan said diaper friction? Different location.

He accepted.

Then missed pediatric appointments.

He never checked portal.

Megan managed.

Gendered default.

He worked.

She handled baby.

He thought modern partnership but fell into old split.

Amanda required parenting safety plan before placement.

Daniel had to learn infant care himself.

Feed.

Sleep safety.

Medical appointments.

Recognizing distress.

No leaving all to spouse.

He agreed.

Then home assessment.

His apartment was shared with Megan.

Could Noah return there?

Not while Megan prohibited and evidence scene? After search complete, possible. But Daniel could not bear.

He moved temporarily into my guest room.

CPS preferred Noah placed with me as kinship caregiver while Daniel resided but did not have unsupervised primary until evaluation? We can set emergency kinship placement to me, Daniel allowed supervised/full under plan.

My home changed overnight.

Bassinet.

Formula.

Diapers.

Monitor.

I was sixty eight.

People asked:

“Can you do this?”

I said:

“With help.”

My daughter Laura? We need maybe Daniel has sister? Could help. Not necessary.

I hired night nurse two nights weekly from licensed agency with Daniel paying.

No martyr grandmother.

Daniel took evening shift.

I slept.

He worked reduced hours.

His employer granted leave after he told.

No pride.

Then first night home.

Noah woke 1:15.

Daniel jumped.

I stayed bed.

He handled.

At 1:40, still crying.

Daniel came door.

“Mom.”

“Yes?”

“I need help.”

Those words.

Good.

We took turns.

No unsafe shortcut.

No shame.

Then hospital follow up.

Dr. Reed said rib healing.

Toxicology clear.

No neurologic injury detected from exposure at that point.

Thank God.

The video prompt had “shadowed mass on deep brain scan” but story seed says poison. We need maybe no brain mass. Prompt line says doctor points to shadowed mass on deep brain scan, then “poison in blood.” Could adapt: scan showed a subtle signal that prompted toxicology, not permanent damage. Maybe we should incorporate. We haven't. We can add:

MRI had nonspecific signal changes related to depressed breathing? Hmm careful. Better doctor had been concerned about mild cerebral oxygen stress marker but follow-up normal. But that could be serious. We can say initial imaging showed a small area of concern that later proved temporary and not structural injury. Let's introduce now.

Dr. Reed explained initial brain imaging showed mild nonspecific changes consistent with episodes of reduced oxygen or sedation, but no permanent structural injury could yet be concluded. Follow up needed.

This heightens.

I asked:

“Will he be okay?”

“We believe prognosis is good, but infants need monitoring.”

Good.

Then old rib.

Would heal.

No surgery.

Then legal.

Megan charged with two counts child abuse causing injury, child endangerment, and administering a non prescribed sedating substance. Exact charges depend, but fiction.

Patricia not charged initially pending evidence. Could face child endangerment for supplying drug and failure? Since she actively supplied an old medication to infant caregiver and helped conceal. Prosecutors charged her with contributing to child endangerment and obstruction for telling Megan to hide? We'll do later.

Then Daniel filed for emergency sole custody.

But courts did not instantly terminate Megan parental rights.

She had rights.

No contact pending criminal and child protection.

Guardian ad litem appointed for Noah.

Daniel hated bureaucracy.

Then learned value.

An independent person represented Noah.

Not him.

Not Megan.

Not me.

The child.

Then Megan sent one letter through attorney:

Daniel,

I know you hate me.

Then:

Please don’t let your mother raise our son to think I am monster.

Daniel showed me.

I said:

“Don't make Noah’s future about defending me or condemning her.”

He nodded.

Then:

“What do I tell him?”

“Truth when age appropriate.”

No need turn mother into monster.

But no lie.

Then we learned Patricia had saved a photograph.

Three weeks earlier.

The mark.

She had taken it too.

She had more evidence than I did.

May you like

And she had deleted it from her phone after Megan asked.

Cloud backup restored it.
