Chapter 17 - Noah’s Anger

At ten, Noah became angry.

Not violent.

Angry.

He stopped answering Megan’s calls.

Refused Patricia.

He shouted at Daniel:

“You all knew except Grandma!”

Not exactly.

But emotionally.

Daniel did not defend.

“I understand why it feels that way.”

Then Noah:

“You went to work.”

“Yes.”

“You left me.”

Daniel cried.

“Yes, that week.”

“Why?”

“I thought work mattered and I did not understand danger.”

“Mom told you scared.”

“Yes.”

“So you knew.”

Daniel took.

“I knew she was overwhelmed. I did not know she might hurt you. I still should have responded differently.”

Good.

Then me.

Noah asked:

“Did you ever think Mom was bad before?”

“No.”

“Never?”

“I thought she didn’t like me much.”

He almost smiled.

Then:

“Did you see things?”

“I noticed she was anxious and controlling about baby care. I did not know she was hurting you.”

“Could you have?”

“Maybe if I asked better questions. I don't know.”

No superhero.

Then he asked Megan by letter:

Did you want me?

She wrote back:

Yes.

Then:

I wanted you very much. Wanting a baby and being able to cope safely with every part of caring for one are different.

Then:

I was ashamed to admit I was not coping.

Then:

My shame became secrecy, and secrecy made you unsafe.

Noah read.

Tore letter? Maybe folded.

Then:

“I hate her.”

I said:

“You can feel.”

“Do you?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because my feelings are mine.”

He rolled eyes.

Then:

“Do I have to forgive?”

“No.”

Good.

He took year off contact.

Megan accepted.

This was key proof of change.

No surprise gifts.

No guilt.

She sent birthday card through Daniel, no pressure.

Noah left unopened.

Fine.

Patricia also stopped.

Then Sarah.

She became daily mother figure.

Noah called her Mom sometimes accidentally then intentionally.

Megan heard through Daniel? He told before she heard maybe.

Megan cried privately.

She sent:

He can call Sarah whatever feels right. Please don’t make him manage my feelings.

Good.

Noah resumed Megan contact at eleven on own.

Why?

He wanted ask about first birthday.

She had missed.

He asked:

“Do you know what cake?”

She said:

“I saw pictures through lawyer. Blue icing.”

They talked.

Small.

Then counseling.

At twelve, he visited Megan’s apartment.

First time.

Daytime.

Daniel dropped.

Noah inspected medicine cabinet? Maybe not.

But saw locked medication box.

He asked:

“Why locked?”

Megan answered:

“Part of safety habits I kept even after supervision.”

He nodded.

Then she had framed no baby photos? She had one newborn picture.

Noah saw.

“That me?”

“Yes.”

She cried.

“Can I have?”

“Of course.”

He took.

This did not mean forgiveness complete.

It meant his history belonged to him.

Then Patricia.

Noah remained distant longer.

Because her choice felt colder.

Megan was overwhelmed.

Patricia was adult grandmother who saw injury and chose silence.

At thirteen, he wrote:

I can forgive Mom sooner than you.

Patricia replied:

I understand.

May you like

No defense.

That response helped.
