Chapter 15 - Megan Comes Home

Megan did not come home.
Important.
She was released into supervised transitional housing near Dayton, an hour away.
Terms:
No unsupervised contact with minors initially.
Mental health treatment.
No controlled medication access? Specific conditions could be.
Employment reporting.
No contact with Noah except family court approved.
She worked administrative job at dental supply company because license restrictions prevented prior hygienist role immediately.
She accepted.
No press.
No reunion at prison gate.
Patricia wanted pick her up.
Megan said no.
Her reentry counselor did.
That surprised.
She was trying separation from mother.
Patricia had enabled.
Megan needed boundaries too.
Then family court.
Megan petitioned for therapeutic visitation.
Daniel opposed initial physical.
Guardian ad litem recommended gradual.
Noah six.
His therapist asked.
“Do you want meet Megan in person?”
He thought.
“Will Dad be there?”
“No, but therapist.”
“Grandma?”
“Can wait nearby.”
“Okay.”
Then:
“Do I have to hug?”
“No.”
That decided.
First meeting at supervised family center.
I waited hallway.
Megan walked past me.
Stopped.
“Helen.”
“Hi.”
She looked thinner.
Older.
“Thank you for bringing him.”
“He chose.”
“Yes.”
Good correction before I made.
Then Noah entered.
He held dinosaur still, though now interest moved to space.
Megan crouched but did not touch.
“Hi.”
“Hi.”
“You got big.”
“That’s what everybody says.”
She laughed.
Then they played card game.
Therapist.
Twenty minutes.
At end:
“Can I see you again?”
Megan asked carefully.
Therapist had perhaps advised not put decision on child? Better:
“I’d like to see you again if you want.”
Noah:
“Maybe.”
Megan nodded.
“Okay.”
No guilt.
Outside, he shrugged.
“She’s nice.”
Then:
“Is she dangerous?”
Hard.
“Not in this setting. Adults are making sure visits are safe.”
“Was she dangerous when I baby?”
“Yes.”
He nodded.
Kids can hold.
Then Megan asked to meet Daniel in mediated session.
He declined first.
Months later agreed.
They had not spoken face to face in six years.
Daniel told me afterward.
She said:
“I blamed you for working.”
He said:
“I blame myself for leaving too much.”
She:
“That’s yours, but I hurt him.”
Good.
Then:
“Do you forgive?”
He said:
“Partly.”
Then:
“I don’t want relationship except co parenting boundaries.”
She accepted.
Then Sarah.
Megan asked to meet because Sarah cared for Noah.
Sarah said yes.
Brief.
Megan:
“Thank you.”
Sarah:
“I’m not replacing.”
Megan:
“I know.”
Then Megan cried.
No competition.
Then visits every two months.
No overnights.
No caretaking.
Gradually longer supervised.
She never got automatic custody.
At eight, after years stability, court allowed unsupervised daytime visits in public? Maybe with safety review. Daniel terrified.
Noah wanted.
Megan had no violations.
Therapist supported.
First unsupervised two hour library and lunch.
Noah came back:
“She lets me get two desserts.”
Daniel glared.
“Boundary.”
We laughed.
Then Megan apologized:
“Sorry.”
Normal parenting negotiation.
Could a person who once hurt infant safely interact years later? Sometimes rehabilitation possible under supervision and expert review. Our fiction allows.
No overnight yet.
Then Patricia.
Megan did not want her mother involved in visits initially.
Important.
She said:
“My mother taught me to hide.”
Later, Patricia had to build independently.
Noah wrote one letter:
Hi Grandma Patricia. I like sharks.
That was all.
She framed? Maybe.
Then Megan started speaking in postpartum support groups? Not publicly with Noah details. She volunteered after supervision maybe. Could avoid.
May you like
She simply lived.
That was enough.
