Chapter 24 - The Last Hearing
The final legal hearing happened six years after the entryway night.
Not criminal.
Administrative.
Trust court approved completion of restitution and closed Robert’s former trusteeship accounting.
Ryan’s restitution had been paid according to judgment through asset liquidation and wage payments.
Mom and Dad had satisfied ordered civil amounts.
529 administrator settlement complete.
Lakeview remained trustee.
No outstanding fraudulent vendor claims.
Kevin Marsh had cooperated and received his own modest sentence/probation years earlier for false invoices, restitution paid.
No secret accomplice.
No hidden account.
No new charge.
Criminal cases closed.
No appeals pending.
Family no contact orders adjusted to current terms.
Ryan’s remained in place as to Eli until adulthood unless Eli requested modification.
He never did.
Mom no longer under criminal no contact but contact occurred only by our consent.
Dad unrestricted legally, but boundaries remained ours.
Eli’s medical issues closed too.
Jaw healed.
No chronic pain.
Concussion resolved.
Therapy reduced from weekly to as needed.
He still disliked unexpected touch around shoulders.
He communicated it.
That was not failure.
At hearing, Judge asked whether I had anything to add.
“No.”
Six years earlier I would have given speech.
Now?
Everything already in record.
Outside, Dad waited.
Mom stood farther away.
They were divorced.
Civil.
Not friends.
Mom looked at me.
“Is it over?”
“Yes.”
“Really?”
“Yes.”
She cried.
Dad exhaled.
I felt no triumph.
Just exhaustion leaving.
Eli was at school.
Exactly where he should be.
The law had handled adult damage without requiring him to sit through final accounting.
That evening he came home.
“How’d court go?”
“Finished.”
“All?”
“All.”
He dropped backpack.
