Chapter 21 - Ryan Comes Home

Ryan was released when Eli was thirteen.
He had completed prison programming.
Gambling treatment.
Anger intervention.
Paid partial restitution.
Supervision required:
No contact with Eli.
No direct contact with me except through counsel for legal matters.
No gambling.
Employment reporting.
Financial restitution schedule.
He moved three counties away.
Worked in warehouse logistics.
No family business.
No childcare.
He sent me an apology through attorney.
I did not give it to Eli automatically.
I asked.
“No.”
So I did not.
Ryan existed.
At distance.
That was enough.
One afternoon, Eli saw him by accident.
We were at a regional soccer tournament.
Ryan’s new employer had a booth at adjacent event center.
He walked across parking lot.
Saw us.
Stopped.
Eli froze.
Ryan raised both hands slightly.
Then turned around and walked away.
No approach.
No words.
No violation.
Eli started shaking.
I put hand near shoulder.
“Touch?”
He nodded.
I held him.
“Do you want to leave?”
“No.”
“Sure?”
“Yes.”
He played.
Scored once.
Afterward:
“Was Uncle Ryan scared?”
“Maybe.”
“Of police?”
“Maybe.”
“Of me?”
“I don’t know.”
Eli thought.
“I hope not.”
“Why?”
“I don’t want people scared of me.”
That sentence told me he had healed in a way Ryan never had as a child.
Then:
“I just want him to stay away.”
“He did.”
“Good.”
No redemption scene.
May you like
No reunion.
Sometimes growth means respecting distance.
