From Walter and June’s personal estates plus lake trust, I inherited substantial money over decades.
That fact used to make me uncomfortable.
Because family wrongdoing and money sat too close.
But inheritance was not verdict.
Grandma Evelyn created trust before Eli existed.

Walter made his.
Their mistakes did not automatically invalidate all affection or planning.
I used money:
Retirement.
Travel.
Helped Eli with down payment? Only if gift transparent. I gave Eli $75k as lifetime gift toward house, equal? no other kids. Fine.
Charity.
Healthcare.
No secret conditions.
I documented.
When I gave Eli house gift:
“Gift. Not loan.”
He signed acknowledgment with lender.
Clear.
He laughed:
“Family paperwork.”
“Yes.”
“Good paperwork?”
“Yes.”
Clarity.
Then my own estate.
I did not create tests:
Must visit.
Must forgive.
Must keep Carter name.
Must keep lake tradition.
No lake.
I left:
Most to Eli.
Some to charities.
A fund for Sophie education? Could via will, but Eli adult. Fine.
Professional executor.
No Derek (deceased).
No control after death.
Then I told Eli summary.
He said:
“Can you spend more first?”
Mom’s lesson.
So I traveled.
Bought comfortable chair.
Not four-thousand-dollar recliner maybe. Could.
Then one day I heard June’s voice in head:
“Plate costs…”
